This little accident better produce a traumatic brain injury.

Wobbling up the driveway, she met Pete working on his rubber band ball. “Hey, what’s wrong, Millie?”
Rubbing her head, “I don’t know. I think I crashed your bike.”
“Get off right now!” He made a careful inspection, “I don’t see any scratches. Hey, what happened to your face?”
Thunder rumbled in the distance as Millie tried to see the back door through her blurry eyes. She tripped over the threshold and stumbled into the kitchen.
Turning from the kitchen sink, Hanna rushed to close the door against the wind, “Millicent, what on earth happened to your face?”
“I think I fell off Pete’s bike.”
“Go lie down on the couch.” Using a wet washcloth, Hanna wiped blood and gravel from Millie’s left cheek. “What happened?”

Relief washed over Millie as she and her father walked into the blustery night. Wind and rain pounded against them as they pushed through the front door to Hanna waiting in the living room, “Well, what did the doctor say?”
Millie headed up the stairs to bed while Max and Hanna discussed the doctor’s findings. Slipping into bed, Katie asked, “Millie, what happened?”
“I don’t know, Kate. I was riding Pete’s bike and the next thing I knew, I was laying on the sidewalk. They wanted to keep me overnight, but I used my best begging voice, so Dad said I could come home. No Olympics tonight, Mom would have a fit if my scratched face got blood on the sheets.”
“Okay. Maybe tomorrow, Millie.”
The voice of the weatherman from the television echoed up the stairs as Millie drifted to dreamland, “. . . Chance of tornado . . . .”

The hand shaking Millie startled her, “Is there a tornado? Do we have to go to the basement?”
Hanna gently touched her forehead, “No, Millie, the doctor said we need to check on you.”
