The effects of litter on school campus
Anybody would feel complete sadness if they were to see a dead dog strangled to death by a plastic bag on the side of the road but what about other wildlife creatures ? LItter causes more harm than we really know. Litter causes many damages all around communities because it affects the environment, the communities overall reputation, and it is very expensive to clean up.

What environmental damage is caused from litter?
As the rise in trash amounts continue to increase more and more of our environment and wildlife continues to die off. “Litter isn’t just unsightly: It can cause vehicle accidents and injuries, smoother plants, start fires and harm or kill animals.” (Susan Revermann) Most trash found laying

When asked how trash negatively impacts schools reputations we got answers like, “Well I think it’s really unfortunate when people, parents, community members came out to support some sort of athletic event football, soccer, lacrosse games that are out here, a track meet that’s out here and there’s trash everywhere and it’s all form our students at lunch.” (Ms.Weber 9th grade english teacher/coach) When we see people in our society litter it shows that we as a community don’t care about our image or the fact that the area around us is dirty. Which depletes our communities good reputation. When students are asked about their opinion on litter around school campus according to 11th grader Alexis Oliver, “ It’s like why are you going to litter here but not your own home? It’s just not the way a school place should be treated.” Here’s the question we should all be asking ourselves is litter a bad thing or a good thing? Well based on Alexis Oliver if you can’t live in a dump at your own home why should schools be the next option, considering you live there for up to 9-10 months a year? It can be very disgraceful and unfortunate to the community when litter is left on the ground, but, as Ms.Weber has stated this can all be changed if the community takes the time to mature about their actions and grow together as humans and keep …show more content…
Litter Cost You found recent studies that reveal, in fact, that 11.5 billion dollars is wasted away each year in the effort to clean up litter. 11.5 billion dollars is a lot of money that could've helped out the community with our roads, bus stations, traffic light repairs but was instead used to clean up litter left around by citizens around our community. “According to KAB, littering coats the U.S $ 11.5 billion every year. Not included in this estimate are the indirect costs of littering, including decrease in property values, commerce and tourism as well as the health effects of this form of waste.” (Earth 911) With more litter there is more money lost, from people who are already struggling to pay bills and taxes as it is so why should this be added to the increasing amount of bills we already pay? Susan Revermann (2017) states that federal governments spend millions of dollars on litter, costs for these efforts could greatly be decreased and used more towards environmental projects , if more people disposed of their garbage properly. The main consequence to people littering is that others around the community are forced to spend their money to get rid of the litter left around, when this all could be effectively avoided if more people were being held accountable for their actions when they decide

“Recycling all of your home’s waste newsprint, cardboard, glass, and metal can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 850 pounds a year” (CU Facts). letting these materials become recycled instead of being thrown in landfills let the rest of the trash decay at the very slow rate it already goes without having to go around the not needed materials. Having these bins could help the already sorta polluted is being clouded by the sand processing machines across the river from pecan plantation. Eliminating as much environmental impact as possible needs to become Pecan and Granburys worry since we 've already put in multiple mining plants, a dam, and even a nuclear power plant. although it may be a little expensive to buy more recycling bins but in the long run the community would save money and the environment keeping less trash out for the garbage man to pick up and more plastics, bottles, and cans filling the bins can help save cost on how many garbage trucks need to come through and the air would become a little more pure.…

Laskas mentions in her research that individuals create these mountains of garbage, some in their own communities and yet the thought of looking at it or smelling it causes anger. Residents don’t want to be reminded of what they have caused, it leads me to think there is a form of guilt when we are reminded of our planets need for us to be more careful. Sanitation is one of the harder jobs out there in my own opinion . You touch and deal with something that society has come to believe is infectious. Garbage men are not paid nearly what they deserve, they are looked upon as lepers the bottom of society.…

In No Impact Man, Colin Beavan discusses many important topics, one of which is about trash. This topic got my interest because we see it everywhere, Colin goes into detail and discusses a lot of facts about it. An interesting observation was made regarding the black color of trash bags, that the reason trash bags are black instead of transparent is because people do not or cannot deal with seeing what is inside of them. Another related topic that always gets my concerns is recycling our waste. There are a lot of people that don’t recycle and just don’t care.…

Society nowadays face many problems as a whole, as well as problems individually in different neighborhoods. In the surrounding area of Woodside, Queens there are many issues in which should be fixed in order to provide a happier living environment for its residents. People toss litter around like a game of basketball, except there’s no hoop around to aim it in (simile and irony)! Although it is a personal choice to litter and be impatient to locate a trashcan, lack of trash bins for disposable waste is a major issue. Let’s say you go out for a walk with a bag of chips.…

There was a survey in 2005 that said 98 percent of Seattle households participate in the curbside recycling program, and that only 16 minutes are spent recycling in each household. What are those 16 minutes spent doing? Sorting, extracting, rinsing, bundling, and stomping. These are easy things that everyone can do, if you get more people in your house to help it could go by even faster. People are used to not recycling because they have never been forced to, but if everyone put recycling into their daily routine it would be a habit and not a…

Littering is what pollutes the earth. Fast food wrappers and cigarette butts are the most commonly littered items and 50% of the time the litterer doesn’t even realize he/ she is doing it (EPA, 2016). By throwing the trash in a garbage and bottle and cans in the recycle bin instead of out the window, the amount of pollution that is affecting our water sources and wildlife will decrease. This will also save time and money spent on trying to clean the litter up.…
