The hand capturing method allows more accuracy when looking at our datum for the mean of body lengths of the Corophium Volutator. While using this method we are sampling from a wider surface at low tide, which allows us to pick out more of a variety of these organisms from the environment we are studying. As well as the Corophium Volutators otherwise known as mud shrimps have not been exposed to anything in this sampling technique therefore they are in their most natural habitat, where as in the sediment sifting method they are exposed to seawater. The hand capturing method allows us to sample from a larger surface therefore our datum will be more precise giving us a more accurate representation of the organisms in this environment. …show more content…
We used these sampling methods in order to distinguish variables such as sexual dimorphism, sex ratios and body length between male and female C.Volutator.
C.Volutator where collected from the mudflats of Nova Scotia, Wolfville using the two sampling techniques given in the Laboratory Instructions. The first sampling method we used was sediment sifting method; mud had been collected from the mudflats. Only the first two or three inches from the surface were being used. Seawater had been poured from the tidal pool through the sieves into a bucket in order to expose the mud shrimps. Using forceps we collected the C.Volutator for both sieves. We then placed them in a jar in which contained 95% ethanol in order to restrain them from analysis. For the hand capturing method we collected the C.Volutator from the surface by walking out onto the mud flats, which was at low tide, and physically picking them up with forceps. We then immediately placed the mud shrimp in the hand capturing killing jar in which also contained 95% ethanol to preserve them from analysis (Biology Department, Laboratory 2, …show more content…
We placed the C.Volutator in a petri dish and we observed them under the dissecting scope. We made sure to separate them by sex and by sampling method in order to observe the difference in body lengths. Once we placed them on the slides we then placed the slide on the projection scope. Using a string and a ruler we measured the body length (not including the antennae) of the C.Volutator’s shadow. In order to find the actual length we divided it by the actual length; we then recorded the datum and repeated the procedure (Biology Department, Laboratory 2,
