Lithium Research Paper

Many of lithium’s compounds are used as mood stabilizing drugs for treating and controlling manic episodes such as manic depression, bipolar disorder and aggressive or self-harming behaviour. Lithium would also be the quickest way to change erratic behaviour because of its atom structure. Lithium is a group one metal which is very reactive. This is because lithium has one electron in its outer most shell and has a goal to share/lend the electron in order to gain a full outer shell and become stable. Meaning that once the lithium drug is in the body it becomes widely spread throughout the central nervous system and interacts with neurotransmitter and receptors, decreasing norepinephrine (noradrenaline) release and increasing serotonin synthesis

Sodium having similar chemical properties to lithium, both being alkali metals, makes it an ideal candidate for research as a new type of rechargeable Ion battery. The workings of a Sodium-Ion battery (NIB) is similar to that of the LIB, the difference being the materials used and that sodium ion tends to form a complex with the anode material unlike the lithium ions that tend intercalate between the anode material layers. Sodium and salts of Sodium are relatively cheap and abundant compared to that of lithium. For example, sodium containing precursors are widely available in the USA with a reserve of 23 billion tonnes of soda available. This would make sodium a more viable and cost effective alternative for grid energy storage.…

The aim of this experiment is to reduce chromium (III) to chromium (II) using Zinc as an oxidising reagent using Schlenk techniques in the inert gas atmosphere using Nitrogen. The goal is not to let oxidation happen that will prevent the formation of chromium (II) species. Also, the aim of this experiment is to successfully form chromium (II) acetate, to find its percentage yield and to conduct IR analysis to prove the success of the reaction as well as the purity of the compound. Magnetic susceptibility measurements will be required to determine whether the complex is diamagnetic or paramagnetic.…

Electrolytes serve many important functions in the body. When you exercise, you lose electrolytes in your sweat. Electrolytes are used by cells to maintain voltages, and to carry electrical signals. These impulses can carry nerve signals, and allow muscles to move. Cells use electrolytes to maintain fluid balances, by moving the electrolytes in and out of the cell.…

All sorts of electronics - cell phones, laptops, digital cameras, etc. - are ever-present in today’s society. Nowadays, these electronics are powered from Lithium-ion batteries. The major processes throughout the lithium life cycle can be divided into five stages: resource mining, chemical production, product manufacture, product use and waste management (Sun et al., 2017). Lithium is extracted from two sources - ore and salt brines - and the lithium minerals are then transformed into basic chemicals such as lithium carbonate, lithium hydroxide, and lithium chloride to produce many derivatives (Sun et al., 2017, p. 51-52; Wanger, 2010; USGS, 2018). Originally, the majority of lithium was produced from mineral ore sources - spodumene, lepidolite…

Lithium originates from the Greek word, “lithos,” meaning stone, because at least a small amount of lithium is found in every rock (The Element Lithium, 1). In fact, roughly 0.0007 of the crust of the earth is made up of lithium. At a refined state, it is a malleable, silver-gray metal, which is reactive, flammable, and easily corroded in exposure to moist air (Lithium: historical information, 1). Other characteristics of lithium create specific and productive uses for this element. Lithium has been, and still is, used for many purposes worldwide, including treating medical conditions and the production of batteries (Lithium,…

Counseling is used to help the person overcome their depression, and help teach them to deal with life without the need of LSD (“Treatment for LSD Abuse,” 2009). There currently is not medication to help with LSD addiction or abuse. Hopefully in the near future, there will be a medication to help people overcome this addiction.…
