To do a job well you must first and foremost be prepared. This is the problem discussed in, Are Midwestern School Administrators Prepared to Provide Leadership in Special Education?, written by Michael Schaaf, Robert Williamson, and Jeanne Novak. The studies showcased in this article’s pages are going through the blatant pitfall of Ohio’s state leadership program. Mr. Schaaf brings a school district’s perspective, while Mr. Williamson and Mrs. Novak are coming from two different college universities, and they are all within the Ohio area. An overwhelming one thousand plus administrators were asked, via email, to participate in an online survey about administrators who spend less than one third

SPED Module 10 In this discussion, examine how school districts can ensure that parents are actively and meaningfully involved in the special education process. Stated another way, how are procedural safeguards implemented in day-to-day administrative practice to ensure that parents are involved in their children’s education. Give specific examples that relate to the content in the chapter and instructor notes. Safeguards ensuring that parents would be involved in planning their child’s special education go back to the passage of the Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975 (Yell, 2012, p. 291).…

For EDA 6503 The Principalship, the final course of the Educational Leadership program, I worked closely with Patricia Carson, principal at Mandarin Oaks Elementary School in Jacksonville, FL, to complete my practicum experiences. Ms. Carson has been a school principal for 22 years and the principal of Mandarin Oaks for the last 14 years. According to Ms. Carson, the job of a principal has changed immensely in the last 10 years, and it is more important than ever to keep up with current research-based instructional delivery and teaching strategies. Ms. Carson allowed me to participate in a variety of activities that shed light on the various roles and duties of a principal. Based on the data from the EDG 6285 data project, the major focus…

This was in part due to students in special education. There were several districts who were making meaningful progress in comparison to similar districts, and researchers began to look at what these districts were doing in order to make the gains. There had previously been 11 practices that supported success with students in special education: When researchers looked more closely had several districts in California, they found several themes to be true is most or all of them: inclusions and access to the core curriculum, collaboration between special education and general education teachers, continuous assessment and use of response to intervention framework, targeted professional development, and use of explicit direct instruction, with the first theme being the one that staff most credited with the performance of students receiving special education services (Huberman, Navo,& Parish, 2012). This points to the importance of students with disabilities having access to the general education curriculum. Professionals who provide special education play a vital role in serving as a fundamental resource for general educators in implementing SRBI and in helping to meet the needs of students with disabilities.…

Response to Intervention: Tirzah Carroll Reinhardt University Special education is no longer the sole responsibility of a special needs educator. General education teachers are now finding their classrooms operating under the inclusion philosophy, which believes that all students, regardless of type or severity of their disability, have a right to receive instruction in a general classroom (Taylor, Smiley, & Richard, 2009). In fact, general education teachers are involved in the learning disability identification process long before these students ever receive an individualized education program (IEP). Schools are now implementing a systematic approach for monitoring student progress called the Response to…

In the United States, discussions on school leadership and equity were raised as early as the 1970s during the “effective school movement” (Edmonds, 1979) and gaining a stronger footing with the focus on the human dimensions of schooling taking place during the 1990s (Murphy, 1995). Today, the prominence of equity in our contemporary school leadership practices is evident in the new Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC) leadership policy standards. In the ISLLC’s original publication in 1996 and its subsequent revised edition in 2008, the practice of equity appears in only one of the six standards. Now, in a recently published ISLLC’s (2015) policy standards, four of the ten standards discuss issues of equity. For example, according to the new ISLLC (2015) standards, school leaders must safe guard and promote equity, address matters of equity and cultural responsiveness, and develop and administer systems for fair and equitable…

Regardless of my positions of Director of Special Services, principal and superintendent, my background of working with special education programs is extensive. My strong belief in providing the very best educational experience for all learners stems in part of being a parent of a child with an IEP. Our charge of providing a thorough and efficient education dictates both morally and ethically that we do not deprive any learner of the experiences that others may have when achieving academically and socially. I stay active in the Section 504 process and routinely supervise the district’s special education programs and…

Thomas Watson, former chairman of IBM said, “Nothing so conclusively proves a man’s ability to lead others, as what he does from day to day to lead himself.” In my current position, the best things I can do to strengthen and improve the teaching profession are to teach to the best of my abilities, be a professional, maintain a positive attitude, keep my focus student-centered, and influence other teachers to do the same. One of my fellow teachers, Mrs. Pam Parris, and her exceptional children’s class, sponsor an initiative to encourage students and staff at our school to “be the change” in how students with special needs are treated. The effects of the Project Unify program have been astounding. Mrs. Parris’ students are able to participate in my band and chorus classes side by side with regular education students.…

I conducted an interview with Tamara Perez, who is currently a director at Smart Starts Preschool. She has an A.A. degree in Early Childhood Education, Staff Credentials, Director Credentials, and has been teaching for 12 years. Becoming a teacher was not exactly what she had in mind. She was going through a rough time in her life and she began working as a teacher.…

It becomes critical for the principal to ensure that students deemed with an exceptionality are receiving adequate services and they are in full compliance. Part 2: Special Education Law and Policies “As someone charged with ensuring equality in the school environment, you have heard the term inclusion-the principle that students with special needs, skill sets, and abilities should be integrated in publicly supported activities to the same extent as their nondisabled peers.” (Taylor, 2010, p. 8) To make sure that special education students are included in public education, school leaders must make sure that these students are a part of the least restrictive environment possible. There are many different stipulations that need to be fulfilled for a school to be in compliance with special education laws, but we will focus on five key ideas that keep special education students in their least…

The many challenges the school systems faced was having enough teachers and resources to accommodate the growing number of students admitted into the Special Education system. The ongoing problem that the Special Education department has faced is staffing enough teachers to accommodate a child with a disability. Many schools lack funding or may be in a low income area that is plagued with poverty and this discourages opportunities for teaching positions to be filled. The school systems are overburdened and children are lost through the laws and guidelines that have been put in place (Mason& Williams…
