Story Of An Hour Literary Analysis Essay

Literature contains many different features and vices that are used to make reading more enjoyable for the reader. There are elements like plot arrangement and emotional tone that affect the overall purpose of written works. Out of all the short stories I have read in this class, the one that I found most memorable was “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin. I found “The Story of an Hour,” to be most memorable because of the plot layout and the differences in emotion portrayed the main character. Before one can analyze a story, one must first know what the story is about. “The Story of an Hour” is a short story about a woman who has just learned that her husband was killed in a train crash. Mrs. Mallard is distraught by the news and instantly breaks into tears. She then runs up to her room and locks herself inside. While inside her room, Mrs. Mallard struggles with her different emotions. She eventually realizes that the rest of her life would belong to her and her alone. “The Story of an Hour” finds itself among the ranks of those most memorable because of its plot layout and bizarrely extreme fluctuation of emotion. “The Story of an Hour” has a plot that progresses in a normal fashion, but it happens under abnormal circumstances, such as beginning with the news of her husband’s death and then ironically ending with her death.
