This imagery shows how the paralysis that Dubliners cling to in their everyday mundane routines is not much different from anyone else. The colors James Joyce describes in the story also painted the canvas to symbolize the mundane boring routine lives of Dubliners. Colors such as the “dull, yellow light brooded over the houses and the river” and Gretta’s “shoes in a brown parcel tucked under one arm” reinforces the dull and lifeless life of a Dubliner. These symbols also played into the theme of insensibility and being unable to live life because of the blindness to these mundane routines.
