The title of this book is called The Cay. The Cay is an island where Philip and his friend Timothy are trapped. Philip lives on a little island by the name of Curaçao during World War II. His father works in an oil refinery and has a lot of access to ships so he figures out a way to get Philip and his mother onto a ship called HATO. As luck would have it, the HATO is torpedoed. Philip gets knocked out during the evacuation. When he comes to he is not on the life raft, but on a little makeshift raft. He sees a black, West Indian man with a thick accent. He identifies himself as Timothy and his cat, Stew cat. Philip develops blindness from a Philip and Timothy end up on an island called The Cay. They must work together to survive this horrific …show more content…
There are many surprises throughout the book that I didn’t expect such as, when Philip goes blind or Timothy dies. The novel has many different moods, happy, sad, frustrated, scared, proud, and bravery. These moods are implemented very well throughout the book. For example, when Philip woke up to a black man and not his mother. The book also has very high vocabulary. Even though the book may be short it may be a good book for a high school student. The ending of the book is also very thought out because Philip ends up getting his sight …show more content…
For example when Philip gets on the HATO or when Philip gets his sight back. I think the most important one that I would change would be when Timothy dies. The main reason that I would change this event is because with timothy alive, the book might end in a way where there could be a second book. The way the book ends now Philip gets his sight back and everything is perfect. If the author, Theodore Taylor wanted to make a second book he should end it with Timothy alive. Another reason that the author should change this event is because Philip might have gotten to New York faster with timothy to help him. Philip also would have gotten his vision back faster. To conclude, there are many small events that I would change but the most important one is when Timothy

My favorite line in the book “The Things They Carried” was located in the final story “The Lives of the Dead”. “I’m young and happy. I’ll never die. Bone Gap by Laura Ruby is a fantasy book about perspective. A main topic in the book is the difference between looking and seeing. It includes imagery of fantasy, different views of self-image, and the heavy burden that beauty can be and the detrimental ways we look at and treat women. It can be dreadfully tense and there is this feeling of anxiety that runs throughout the novel. The book is romantic when it needed, empowering where it counts, and is simply beautiful in its telling.…
