Moreover, Patrick learns to spend more time with family and friends in the ending because of the disasters that had happened before with his mother’s disappearance. “Patrick remembered her looking at him so long it made him uncomfortable, so just looked away. And by the time he looked back, there was just an empty space where she had been.” This gives evidence that Patrick learned a heartfelt lesson through the theme of the story.
