Throughout the world, there are many pieces of work which are generally accepted as art. For example, one would likely agree that Beethoven 's Seventh Symphony, The Great Gatsby, and the Mona Lisa are exquisite examples of artistry. There is, however, a certain category of art which does not always get the recognition it deserves as an art form. Containing many of the same elements as these other artistic pieces, video games should be fully recognized as works of art. Any artistic piece needs various components in order for it to be complete. One of the most important of these components is work. Artwork does not simply make itself, and artists are required to often spend copious amounts of time and effort into making their finished products. …show more content…
Just as much as any great novel, a creative, genuine storyline is necessary for a video game to be successful. For example, The Last of Us is a video game which is widely recognized among the gaming community as the epitome of an impeccable plot. Based on the reviews of the game, many people who have played it state that they could easily compare its storyline to that of their favorite novels. Due to this, to dismiss these literary elements of a video game as unimportant would be equal to dismissing them as if they were from a novel. Without having an amazing plot structure to bring the rest of a game together, the rest of the video game would fall apart. Such was the case of the game Watch Dogs when it was released. Its story, in combination with other factors, did not make enough sense for the game to be appealing to its audience. This can easily be related to most novels as they can fall apart without the artistic creativity needed to make an interesting story. Varying from the macabre styles of the Dark Souls series and Bioshock to the happy, colorful style of Viva Piñata, the graphics play a significant role in how a game is perceived by the audience who plays it. If these graphics do not meet the general tone or mood of a game, the game itself becomes contradictory and can confuse the audience. If, for instance, a serious, gore-filled game were to be filled with rainbows, pretty unicorns, and frilly dresses, the plot may not be perceived how it was meant to be. Additionally, each game and development studio can have its own unique visual approach to how the game is presented; this parallels the thought needed for any other art form. To use an example, the Treyarch and Infinity Ward game development companies each have different styles like how Da Vinci 's style would be different than that of Van Gogh. By melding together the correct plot and corresponding graphics, the game takes its physical form. There are, however, still some pieces which need to be added in order to mold the unfinished game into a true piece of

Video games are arguably even less associated with storytelling than comics are, with some critics believing “that the video-game form is incompatible with traditional concepts of narrative” (Bissel, 93). Where the medium truly excels, however, is with its capacity for immersion. Like how the addition of sound allowed filmgoers to not just watch the action but hear it, “Every new medium that has been invented … has increased the transporting power of narrative” (Rose, 36). Where readers of books and viewers of movies are passive, gamers take an active role in their narratives. In games like Mass Effect this means making key decisions that affect the development of the plot, but in games like Naughty Dog’s Uncharted and The Last of Us, this…
