In J.J.R. Tolkien’s book The Hobbit we follow the adventures of Bilbo Baggins and 13 dwarves go on a journey to The Lonely Mountain. With the help of the Grand wizard Gandalf they travel across the valley and face many enemies and puzzles. With the main goal to regain Dale and The lonely mountain from the dragon Smaug. I will be going over 5 literary elements and analyzing the book.
There were many symbols in The Hobbit. One was Gandalf and how he is like God. Gandalf was always there when the dwarves and Bilbo needed them. " Then Bilbo understood. It was the wizards voice that had kept the trolls bickering and quarrelling, until the light came and made an end of them." (Tolkien 40). Before this quote Bilbo and the dwarves were being roasted

An example of a motif in The hobbit would be the ring. As it is an important and reoccurring element in the book. With the help of the ring Bilbo is able to survive many obstacles he encountered within the story. One example would be when the Dwarves are in the Goblin caves and Bilbo has to escape from Golem and the other Goblins. "They could not find Bilbo with the ring on, slipping in and out of the shadows of the trees, running quick and quiet, and keeping out of the sun; soon they went bac grumbling and cursing to guard the door. Bilbo had escaped." This is one example of how important the ring is to the story. Without the ring Bilbo might not have escaped the goblins and then the story wouldn't be able to continue. Another example of a time Bilbo used the ring was when The dwarves were caught by spiders in the forest of Mirkwood. "Hobbits are clever at quietness, especially in woods, as I have already told you; also Bilbo had slipped on his ring before he started. That is why the spiders neither saw or heard him coming" (Tolkien 144). With the ring being a big part of the book and story it makes for the perfect …show more content…
For example Bilbo was just a hobbit in his hobbit hole. Soon Gandalf came around and his adventure to being a hero began. As stated n the beginning of the book Gandalf and the others had to persuade him to go on the journey due to how good things would be for him if he goes on the adventure and is successful. "I will go so far as to send you on this adventure. Very amusing to me, very good for you- and profitable too, very likely if you ever get over it." (Tolkien 7). Gandalf had to persuade him to go on the adventure and even after hearing that it was profitable still declined on going on the journey. The dwarves had a hard time convincing Bilbo as well, but he soon joined the journey. Throughout the book he uses his brain to help everyone. From the spiders to Smaug to the battle at the end. Towards the end of the book Bilbo help be the last stand against the many enemies within the battle "On all this Bilbo looked with misery. He had taken his stand on Ravenhill among the Elves-partly because there was more chance for escape from that point, and partly (with the more Tookish part of his mind)because if he was going to be in a last desperate stand, he preferred on the whole to defend the Elvenking." (Tolkien 259). This shows the change throughout the book and supports the theme presented

People often refuse to help their neighbor because of their narcissistic apathy and consequently make the world an unpleasant place. Yet, in every generation exists a human, or hobbit, willing to face their own personal discomfort, correct their shyness and immaturity, and serve others to make the world a virtuous place. Bilbo Baggins grows into this role by helping his friends regain their home from the clutches of an evil dragon named Smaug. In The Hobbit, J.R.R. Tolkien proves Bilbo undergoes a maturation through his new ability to assert himself in a group setting, his rejection of material goods, and his acquisition of self-confidence as the journey progresses, which proves the novel demonstrates an example of a bildungsroman. Bilbo gains a new ability throughout the journey to…

Bilbo uses the riddles to trick Gollum into telling him how to find his way out of the mountains.…

Bilbo, the main character of the story, is a highly respected hobbit because of his family and the fact that he never been on an adventure (hobbits never leave), until now. He is chosen to become a thief and leaves his very comfortable hobbit hole to join thirteen people on an adventure. In the beginning, the hobbit is constantly getting the group in trouble and they start doubting him. Later on the journey, however, he becomes more “heroic” and starts getting his party and himself out of danger. An example of this would be the time when everyone fell asleep and the dwarves were captured by the spiders in the forest, Bilbo used his ring to become invisible and distract the spiders to free the dwarves.…

In the beginning of the book, Tolkien uses vivid descriptions to give us a view inside of Bilbo's life, and to briefly show readers his hobbit hole located in Middle Earth. Tolkien writes in page 1, “In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit... It was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort.” His hole is symbolized as a place of comfort, similar to our comfort in our own homes. Most people in life search for power, sometimes all people want is money, with that comes greed.…

Cleverness is a skill that Bilbo didn’t have in him at the beginning of the adventure. “Many a time afterwards the Baggins part regretted what he did now, and he said to himself: “Bilbo you were a fool; you walked right in and put your foot on it.”” (Tolkien 23) When the dwarves first meet Bilbo, they are able to convince him into going on the adventure with them by comparing him to a grocer.
