Literary Elements In Fahrenheit 451

There are many different ways a literary element creates the meaning of the text. In this case it is in Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. In this book, the main character, Guy Montag suffers through many conflicts in his dystopian society. Conflict is a big literary element that creates the meaning of the text. In the first section of this novel Montag meets a peculiar neighbor. Her name is Clarisse McLean. She is the one who introduces him to the past. Because of this he starts to questions everything he knows about his modern day. For example, on page 6 Clarisse states “Strange, I heard once that a long time ago houses used to burn by accident and they needed a fireman to stop the flames.” These little talks he has with Clarisse begin the stages of his …show more content…
She opened the the fingers of one hand slightly and in the palm of the hand was a single slender object. An ordinary kitchen match. The sight of it rushed the men out and down away from the house. Captain Beatty, keeping his dignity, backed slowly through the front door…” 36

This scene was a very hard for so them. Montag was really affected by this tragic event. This creates the meaning of the text by setting the stage for his final transformation. He realizes in this scene that there are more to books than what everybody is telling him. As he sees the house go up in flames his mindset completely changes. He sees how people love books and transformation is about to occur once he sees what is inside these books. Montag sees this woman and how she died for something she loved. Montag has a really tough life as a firefighter and he really struggles to be happy. For example, Montage is standing with the flame thrower pointed at Beatty.

“And them he was a shrieking blaze, a jumping, sprawling gibbering manikin, no longer human or known, all the writhing flame on the lawn as Montag shot one continuous pulse of liquid fire on him.”
