An example shows up in the very beginning of the play where it foreshadows two people will be brought together, fall in love, and die all because of fate. “A pair of star-crossed lovers take their life, Whose misadventured piteous overthrows Doth with their death bury their parents’ strife,” (1.Pro.6-8). This quote is a perfect example of dramatic irony, just from reading this the audience will know that two people fall in love and die which ends the family feud, but the characters obviously do not know that. This story wouldn’t be interesting if every character had the same traits, and personality which leads to the next literary device, foil.
Foil is a strong difference between two characters, there are many examples of foil in this story, but the two characters that stood out were Romeo and Mercutio. “Romeo! humors! madman! passion! Lover! Appear thou in the likeness of a sigh; Speak but one rhyme, and I am satisfied! Cry but Ay me! pronounce but love and dove.” (2.1.8-10) This quote shows foil by comparing Romeo’s and Mercutio’s views of love, Mercutio is mocking Romeo’s view of love because Mercutio is an anti-romantic. Additionally, they can be used to show the readers how things could have been different if the protagonist continued on another path. In William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare utilizes many foils for protagonist Romeo Montague, such as Paris, Mercutio, and Tybalt. The play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is a story of great tragedy but often overlooked is the tragedy of the first character in the play to die. The character Mercutio is not a minor character with only a few lines, but is in fact a central influencer of how the play unfolds. Although Mercutio is killed early on in the play, his actions and death set in motion the events that lead to the title characters’ eventual deaths. Since he is neutral to both the Capulet and Montague families, Mercutio is the catalyst for Romeo and Juliet to meet each other. Finally, as one of Romeo’s closest friends and one who knows of Romeo’s relationship with Juliet, he encourages the relationship to grow despite the opposition of both families.…

In this passage, Juliet is talking to herself in her room as Romeo stands outside listening while she is realizing how wrong her love for Romeo is because of the feud between their families. This passage is important to the development of the play because Juliet is convincing herself that there is nothing to a name. She focuses on this because she is trying to make it acceptable for them to be together. Through her monologue she chooses to be with Romeo despite everything because she loves him. In my analysis, I have concluded that even though Juliet doesn’t want to defy her family she personally feels that she must because she will disregard all of that to be with Romeo.…

One of the most interesting characters in Shakespeare's famous play Romeo and Juliet is Mercutio. We never know what he looks like on the outside, but his character traits are vivid, like a bouquet of flowers. Mercutio is Romeo’s good friend, they share life, stories and thought together. Shakespeare created Mercutio in direct opposition to Romeo, the main character. Even though Mercutio's life in the play is very short his appearance dominates the dialogue and the action whenever he appears in the play because his character combines traits like using humor and jokes, offensive/provocative language and strong sense of friendship and loyalty.…
