In the short story, Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been, by Joyce Carol Oates, the setting is set in the 1960’s in America. The story has different situations such as: Connie’s house, the shopping plaza, the movie theater, and the drive-in restaurant. One day in a drive-in restaurant a guy seeks interest on Connie and marks her as his belonging. Days later the guy, Arnold Friend, shows up to Connie’s house when she’s alone and tells her to come outside with him so they can be together; Connie rejects to be with him because she’s scared but at the end of the story she eventually gives herself up to Arnold Friend.
The short story is important to read because it uses literary devices in an unbelievable way and gives different details aside

In the story the mother is less insulting, yet she comments about Connie using an excessive amount of beauty supply it’s really the only thing insulting. On the other hand, in the movie the mother tell Connie “I look right into your eyes and see nothing but trashy dreams (Smooth Talk).” The mother is mentioning that she pictures Connie behaving as a slut and will spend her life being with guys to do trashy stuff. Connie’s mother also mentions in a scene that she thinks she knows what Connie is doing, which can be assumed that she thinks Connie doing stuff with guys. Another way the mother is more harsh in the movie than in the story is because in a phone call she compares Connie to June. She said, “June would never do that, she’s perfect (Smooth Talk).” In the movie there’s also a scene where Connie’s mom slaps here because Connie was disrespecting her. Yet the mom says that she doesn’t hate Connie it can be inferred that she dislikes her and view June as the perfect …show more content…
“ I’ll have my arms around you so you won’t need to try to get away and I’ll show you what love is like, what it does (Oats).” In the short story it fails to include what will happen to Connie after going with Arnold, but readers can most likely conclude that Connie is going get sexually assaulted and then murdered because Arnold says that love will make a person do all kinds of actions. Yet in the movie it gives a contrasting ending by Connie and Arnold going to a field and sitting down then Arnold drives Connie back to her house without assaulting her. The reason being why the director decided have Connie live and come back to her family was because that experience probably changed her since the reason why she decided to get with Arnold in the first place was in order to protect her family’s lives. Once Connie sees her mother, after being dropped off from Arnold, Connie gives her a hug which at first she didn’t like to do so because Connie only liked being hugged from guys and rejected her mother when she tried to hug her. By including this part it made the film version worse because Arnold friend mostly choose Connie for pleasure reasons so in reality he possibly would’ve killed her and taken advantage of her rather than just letting her

Connie is a fascinating example of the rebellious American teenage girl. She is cocky, flamboyant, and youthful; like the weiro or cockatiel if you will. And like the weiro, underneath those layers of splendor and beauty there is a fragile little being, insecure in reality but a goddess in her world. With the story where are you going, where have you been? by Joyce Oates, the girl Connie is presented in all of what she wants the world to see her as then slowly that splendiferous covering is slowly torn apart till we have the insecure child curled up in this hallow core of a existence.…

At the end of the short story, Connie's whole family goes to a barbecue but Connie decides to stay home. Whilst Connie is home alone a creepy man (Arnold Friend) comes to her house and tries to lure her outside. Even though it is unclear what happens to Connie at the end of the story, I believe that Connie was raped. However, the truth value of my belief is indeterminate because we do not really know what happened to Connie (Crashcourse #7). The reason I believe Connie was raped is because of this sentence: “I'll come inside you where it's all secret and you'll give in to me and you'll love me "(Oates).…

Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been “With great power comes great responsibility”, this very old saying famously appears in the Marvel comic series Spider Man. Uncle Ben uses these wise words to warn Peter Parker that with any sort of power, there is also a negative side that comes with it. We can observe this in, Where you going, Where Have You Been by Joyce Carol Oates. In this story the main character Connie realizes that she has this great power to attract boys, she is very much obsessed with this new power and sees the positive side of her new power, however she doesn’t quite realize the negative side of her power. This is due partly to her age, and to a great degree of being unfortunate to encounter a serial killer like Arnold Friend.…

For centuries, folklore has defined different cultures around the world. Many of these tales have been adapted into mainstream media for children by companies such as Disney. Unsurprisingly, Disney leaves out a lot of the original stories. The fairy tales from the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen are meant to express topics involving the loss of innocence that young ones are not expected to know. Amidst modern literature, Joyce Carol Oates’s inserts similar connotations in her 1966 short story “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been.”…

In the short story Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been, Connie and Arnold Friend are both something close to a rebel and a criminal. Both have made a conscious choice to veer from the societal standard and the expectations of those around them. In an alternate telling, this could have brought them closer together and they could have had a positive relationship, in finding a companion in someone who shares the labelling of being different. However, this is not the case due to the sensation of discomfort brought forth by Friend. Many theories of deviance at play in these two individuals.…
