In the “Skating Party” by Merna Summers, Merna indirectly teaches us a lesson of love and life. People have believed that Nathan had lost his “beloved fiancée” but in his mind he lost the one he truly loved, Delia Sykes, and he kept this a secret from everyone. During the skating party Nathan let the 2 girls go skating off, not realizing that they were skating off onto thin ice. A little bit afterwards “[You could hear] them calling for help” (8) so “A group of men skated out to rescue them” (3). Ironically Nathan was at the front of the line having to choose from saving his fiancée Eunice or the one he truly loved, Delia.
