“The Lottery” was published in 1948, short story, and was written by Shirley Jackson. In this story Jackson uses many examples of literary devices, but the five main examples of literary devices, but the five main devices are style, setting, theme, characterization, and plot. Jackson uses many details and descriptive words to make those five literary devices stand out, and make it easy for the reader to pick up on them. If Jackson did not used enough detail in one of these five the whole story would mostly fall apart, and this story would not be a classic like it is today. The definition of a plot is the main events of a play, novel, movie, or any other similar work presented by the writer in an interrelated sequence. The story starts as the town is gathering in the square. “The people of the village began to gather in the square, between the post office and the bank, around ten o’clock…” (Jackson 1) Throughout the story Jackson begins to show how the lottery plays a significant role within the town. In the beginning of the story as the town folks swarm the square, locals eagerly gather rocks before the drawing. Toward the end of the story, tickets are drawn from the black box resulting in the death of Tessi a main character in this story. The main theme of the story is that traditions are not always beneficial and should not be followed blindly. The author focuses on the town 's tradition and how the characters react to it to try and interest the reader. At the end of this story it states “It isn 't fair, it isn 't right,” Mrs. Hutchinson screamed, and then they were upon her.” (Jackson 6) The statement made by Tessie is to show that once she had been chosen to die she realized the town’s tradition is unjust but had never thought of it before simply because it was a tradition. Theme helps either teach the reader something right and wrong, or teaches the reader a life lesson they need to know.
