Most of the time it was not thought of or ignored, but I will go over three instances where dramatic irony was used in a big way. One instance where dramatic irony was used is when Tybalt was unaware of Juliet and Romeo’s marriage and Tybalt is confused why Romeo will not fight him. In the play “A Raisin in the Sun” the author, Lorraine Hansberry, has incorporated examples of all 3 I’s of oppression. The three I’s of oppression are interpersonal, institutional, and internalized. Institutional oppression happens when one group has more power than another group and our institutions (government, schools, media..) favor the more powerful group. One example of institutional oppression in the play was when the organization tried to tell them that they couldn’t live there because they were black. On page 140 it says, “ As I say, that for the happiness of all concerned that our Negro families are happier when they live in their own communities”.…

These literary devices allows the reader to create a better mental image of the things that they are reading about, in order to create a better overall connection to the story. The first effective use of literary devices occurs when the protagonist is describing her grandmother. She claims that “she was as dry and whiskery as the sausages, but in her it was natural because of her age” (Atwood, 3). This use of simile and hyperbole here allows the reader to create a good mental image of what the grandmother looks like, filling in the blanks with details they create themselves based on the over exaggerated description of the grandmothers age. Another clever literary device is used afterwards by the author when referring to what ailment the protagonist has.…
