Literary devices impact the emotion, the heart, and the feeling of the story. Two authors who use literary devices well are Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner. Faulkner’s dark raw tone deepens the plot and keeps the reader interested. However Hemmingway’s writing flows with dialogue. Making the reader feel as if they are in the setting of which the story is taking place. Knowing the emotions behind Faulkner’s characters helps the reader connect and hold on to the hope that is revealed by the characters hearts. Although Hemmingway’s smooth simple dialogue makes the scene more realistic to today’s world. Both Faulkner and Hemmingway have two different distinct styles. In Barn Burning Faulkner uses dialogue to add interest to certain subjects and show their importance. For example, the father yelling “Go get in the wagon” (208) also Abner saying his father only strikes cold. This dialogue helps emphasize the conflict in the story of Abner following into the family’s racist patterns or making his own patterns to follow. The dialogue Faulkner uses also portrays the personalities of the characters, for example Abners father often uses dialogue with the first word being “get” followed by a command. This helps you know that Abners father is quick tempered while Abners mother normally replies with kind simple words showing she is soft spoken. Dialogue also helps portray the setting of which the characters are in for example, “Nevertheless, fit it will and you’ll hog it and like it.”(210) the reader can see the story takes place in the south due to the broken dialect. While, Hemmingway uses all dialogue in the story Hills Like White Elephants. This gives the reader the effect of listening in on a private conversation. Also, Hemmingway directly says the setting in the story using dialogue, for example when Hemmingway mentions Barcelona Spain also you can tell the man and the woman are in a Bar due to the amount of alcoholic drinks they ordered then with the line “the train is coming in five minutes” (227) you see it is located near a train station. Which they use to deepen the plot and interest the reader in their stories . Hemmingway and Faulkner both wrote short stories that were above their time period. Using their unique styles as a guide for modern literature and how we analyses stories today. These authors impact the readers by using things that relate to everyday life causing future readers to wonder did that actually happen. Their stories cause moments of curiosity, and not writing like the other authors of their time period provided something new that struck readers attention the moment it hit the shelfs
