In the beginning, the main mood of this book is melancholy, with people who are desperately trying to stumble away from the ruins of WWll. The war is almost always mentioned in the letters that they send to each other, and hangs down over their souls like a dreary storm cloud. There seems to be no hope of ever finding the happiness WWll as stolen from them.
As the book progresses, however, the mood begins to lighten, and we can see a bit of cheerfulness
