Poetry can be very complex and even though it can vary and use different techniques to get the point across it may come to the same conclusion and meaning, and can also be interpreted differently. Poetry is meant to be understood in the reader's own way. Why I Hate Raisins, Hand-Me-Down Halloween, and My Brother at 3AM are about the struggles of living in the reservation, but use different style, syntax and tone.
Why I Hate Raisins is a poem about the struggles of not having enough food or not being able to afford food other than what they received. There are certain lines that indicate that their mom had an idea of what was going on and that it might be the side effects of the drugs because she was probably in disbelief, or maybe she didn't want to believe that it had gotten to this point. American Indian adolescents (aged 12-17) show significantly higher rates in the use of cigarettes (16.8% compared to 10.2%), marijuana (13.8%/6.9%) and non-medical uses of prescription drugs (6.1%/3.3%) compared with the national average (Drug Abuse & Native American Indian Youth). Drug abuse is a norm in reservations, especially in young adults. Natalie expressed her experience and how it not only affected her brother first hand, but also her family, showing a small piece of what they go through on a daily basis and how young adults live there. The tone seemed serious from the beginning. In Why I Hate Raisins, she begins with “Love is a pound of sticky raisins” (Diaz, 9), and it sounds relieving as compared to the other poem where she talks about her brother weeping on the front steps waiting for someone to open the door. Their syntax is different as well. Why I Hate Raisins is a just in three big stanzas for the different parts of the story.
