1. The “painted veil”: The author is comparing life to a ‘painted veil’ because we often times cover the truth and live in incomplete and vague lifestyles. The author is trying to convey that human have modified and defined life into what they want it to be. The ‘painted veil’ also refers to an individual’s innocence versus the true reality; Shelly wants his readers to be careful in losing their innocence into the darkness of the real world.

Crystal thesis is as states, “This opposition of the private with the public has intrigued critics of Faulkner’s tale since the story was first published”; I completely agree with her analysis of the short story because she specifically explains how the information hidden I the private affects the personal information that might be publicly revealed.

The narrator embodies the concept of the public and private because in their society everyone was part of a private and public community. After Ms. Emily’s father died, she clenched to her privacy which set curiosity amongst her neighbors.
