Jamal began on the Bronx accompanied by his friends who did not know the true Jamal and his goals. His friends were the reason Jamal met William within a dare,who showed interest into his writing ability. Jamal moved to a new school focusing on writing and basketball. Though Jamal has an obvious improvement of being with William, William gets something out of it that be does not realize. As movielocity says,:They both get something in return. Jamal not only meets his first fan, but a mentor who will challenge and change him forever.”(2001 p. 1) This helps explain how even though the relationship originated to a mentor and a student to a new friendship. The first day Jamal speaks to William he was already challenging him with his attitude and outlook towards Jamal but he faces him with courage even though it can be seen he was frightened. Though, as the movie progresses, Jamal too challenges William to get out of his comfort zone they both gain confidence towards what scared them and an indescribable friendship. Jamal shows courage by taking the beating from William and standing up to him even though he seems to be in the inferior position. Jamal and his friends were afraid of the window and the apartment, but when Jamal entered the apartment he gained so much by facing something that originally scared him. The windows apartment frightened Jamal and even though he entered the apartment on a dare, as he took those steps into the buildings, he exposed himself to a new way of writing and gave himself the opportunity for growth in his writing. “Jamal breaks into Forrester's apartment, leaving behind a book bag full of his writing only to find them returned later with corrections and comments attached.”(Holden 2008 pg 8). Jamal did not know that by leaving his bag he gave himself the opportunity to strengthen his writing and gain a new relationship. Jamal opened himself up to William and the help he would provide to him the moment he entered his apartment. Even though he had the wrong original intentions it took courage for Jamal to go into William's apartment, there was courage being shown on Williams side as well. William exposed his courage when he chose to respond to Jamal’s writing with guidance.
