Literary Analysis: Scarlet Ibis The story, “The Scarlet Ibis”, by James Hurst, asks a question that many ponder upon. Why do people hurt the ones they love? This story tells the tale of a young man who is trying to help his brother. Unfortunately, he is doing this for a selfish reason, only to preserve his self image. This is entirely due to the fact that Doodle, his brother, is a rather odd child. All of these elements play into the theme of the story, greed.
A very clear reason that the theme of the story is greed, is the fact that the narrator is disappointed by brother. This is shown blatantly in the line, “He was born when I was six and was, from the outset, a disappointment. ” (462 ) Not only this, but the narrator is also ashamed

In "The Scarlet Ibis," James Hursts uses vivid imagery to foreshadow how the conflict will affect the end of the story. In the story, we have seen many visual clues that foreshadow the end of the story. In the beginning of the story, Doodle's brother narrates,". The last graveyard flowers were blooming, and their smell drifted across the cotton field and through every room of our house, speaking softly the names of our dead"(Hursts 1). Not only does this set up the atmosphere of the story, but it was already foreshadowing that Doodle was going to die.…

In James Hurst’s short story entitled “The Scarlet Ibis,” Doodle’s brother, the protagonist, changed his attitude from proud to ashamed to illustrate the message that people who experience pride toward another often experience a change in perspective due to that pride. Hurst highlights this when, at the end of the story, the protagonist pushed Doodle to do many activities that Doodle could not do because of his weak heart. Doodle’s brother wanted Doodle to be like everyone else because the protagonist did not want to be embarrassed by his younger brother’s condition. When the narrator was walking with Doodle to the river, he mentioned that “Time was short, and Doodle still had a long way to go if he was going to keep up with the other boys…

The Scarlet Ibis is the story of two brothers and focuses on the conflict in their stormy Relationship. The younger brother, “Doodle” is physically disabled, and the narrator and older sibling “Brother” is embarrassed by Doodle’s disabilities. Brother’s emotions towards Doodle are conflicted; he loves Doodle, but he is also ashamed of him and pushes him past his breaking point teaching him to talk and walk. Brother’s pride is the real reason that he wants to teach Doodle and this pride is both wonderful and terrible at the same time. He treats him unfairly and without compassion at times, pulling him recklessly in the wagon (335), and walking too fast so that Doodle can not keep pace with him (340).…

In the short story, “The Scarlet Ibis,” James Hurst indirectly characterizes the narrator as prideful and sadistic through his thoughts and actions, to convey the idea that an excessive amount of pride causes someone to be deceitful, and act for their own personal gain at someone else’s cost. “The Scarlet Ibis” revolves around the narrator, recalling on his past memory of Doodle, his “invalid” younger sibling. The narrator longs for someone to run with, play with, and fight with; a brother to be proud of. However, the birth of a frail and severely disabled younger brother is a disappointment. In the short story, ‘The Scarlet Ibis’, when the narrator was a young boy of the age of six his “craziest little brother a boy ever had” was born. In the story, it tells how pride can make you do cruel things to gain it back. The family did not expect the baby to live for long, they did not even name him until he was three months old. They named him William Armstrong, “such a name only sounds good on a tombstone.” Once William started to crawl, he crawled backwards, which “made him look like a doodlebug.”…

I agree with E.M Forester when she once said “ A work of literature must provide more than factual accuracy or vivid physical reality. It must tell us more than we already know.” This quote means that the facts shown can go beyond reality, there is more than what is just being shown. I agree with this quote because just because facts are being shown there is always more to them. Literature does more than depict reality, and factual accuracy is not important.…

Hurst uses this to show how Brother feels guilty about everything he done to Doodle. The grindstone which is the Brother and Bleeding tree which is Doodle are next to each other, which makes the Brother remember about the days they spent together and also the Brother could always recall the memories with Doodle when he was young. The most famous character, the Scarlet Ibis is described as a “big red bird”(97) and the narrator explains how the scarlet ibis has been weakened and close to death. The scarlet ibis is small and fragile like Doodle, but more importantly the scarlet ibis is out of place in their yard. The scarlet ibis is not indigenous to Doodle's neighborhood, it's as if the bird is lost.…
