Sonnet 23 by Garcilaso de la Vega is one of the most famous poems, it focuses on a request to a young lady to enjoy the fruit of her youth before the passing time destroys it. Garcilaso wrote this poem in the second person, he shows this when he speaks about the maiden in the middle of the stanza. In which he expresses that she should take advantage of the moment before her age start to manifest on her. After researching, we can’t specifically say when this poem was written, but we can assume that it was written while she was still young, due to the encouraging words used to advise the young maiden to enjoy her youth.
The reality of the sentiment displayed through this poem allows the reader to connect with its message on a personal level. In addition to relating to the professed opinion of the speaker, the reader also gains the ability to revel in the harmonious details of the carefully chosen words. Not only does the message become impactful, but Sonnet 23’s intricate rhyme schemes, syntax, meter, etc. create an aesthetically pleasing experience for the reader. This aspect of poetry remains true even if the reader is unable to understand the language in which the original work is written. This tends to produce different effects when the poem is recited. This, along with the anaphora in the poem assist in creating a sensation of non-stop movement and the steady passage of time. This is also seen in lines 5-6-7, but there are five commas in the verse that slow down the movement to allow us to contemplate the lady’s hair carried by the wind.
