Rick Dockery's life changed in an instant. At one moment he was playing in the AFC Championship getting paid big bucks by the Cleveland Browns, to suddenly being in a hospital bed and sent to Italy to play with a bunch of overage men while getting paid very little compared to what he was used to. In chapter one, Rick is introduced as a third string quarterback, who throughout his NFL career has suffered 3 major concussions and has to decide about his future career outcome. Although the doctors are concerned for his health, he continues playing football even if that means playing in a different country and sacrificing his health. He got an offer from the Parma panthers and takes the offer. When he arrives his main goal is to beat the Bergamo lions which happens at the end of the book. The moment of truth came when, “Time expired, and the Panthers of Parma had their first Super Bowl Trophy”(Grisham, 252). This shows that Rick outwitted his opponents because rather than running the pass heavy offense they always ran, he changed it to an option offense catching the Lions off guard. This also shows how the team and himself were successful and achieved their goals of attaining the championship win. This lead to, “...a smile of deep satisfaction”, proving that Rick is finally comfortable at where he is at in life and his athletic career and is enjoying every moment he is in Italy (Grisham, 258). After the game, “They gathered triumphantly at Mario’s, an old pizzeria in north central Milan, twenty minutes from the stadium”(Grisham, 253). This shows what we would expect from a comedic ending because celebrations are recurring elements and how Rick, the hero, reforms society.
