Luis is a second generation Hispanic father who took his family to California in winter because the motels would be cheaper. Luis is also has traditional values. Luis values saving money. This is shown when he decides to go to California in winter when “the motels were said to be cheaper” (483). This is also shown when his wife suggested they go to Disneyland instead he refuse and for his excuse for not going to Disneyland was because he want his son to “learn the important things first.” (Gilb 483) and uses it as an excuse to save money. Another example of Luis being cheap is when, Luis refuses to buy a hot dog for Ramon even he already promise he would ‘You already told him you would’ (Gilb 484). Luis also values and believes in hard work. This is shown when he picks up his son, Ramon, to see the ocean and talks about the boats and the seagulls and try to explain to his ‘The only important thing in life is hard work.’ (Gilb 483).
