In the short story “A&P” John Updike presents Sammy, a 19 year-old, checkout clerk, young who wants to make some money in a small store located in a vacation town with few residents, most old school belief and structures. But unlike some, he refuses to be stuck there until he retired. John Updike creates a combination of three literary techniques: Character, Setting, and Plot to reveal his meaning that sometimes the rules do not have to make sense in one’s eyes in order to be enforced.

The store is closed to a church which means People cannot walk in the church with bathing suit because this is the value of the church. the store being surrounded by a church plays a good role in Updike setting because he want to enforce the idea that rules are not always meant to be understood, like the 10 commandments but people just follow them because it is a policy that has been established. The two banks represent trades, working and making money to live the American dreams. Updike uses precisely these edifices because they are together what make the American values. With the bank, the church, newspaper store, real estate’s offices Updike emphasizes the idea that A&P is a part of that system where everyone is going to keep following the rules and lives there life.
