Have you ever wondered what it took to live the American Dream? In the “House on mango street” By Sandra Cisneros it shows the things you need to live the perfect american life. The main character in the story is Esperanza,she is a young girl who lives with her family in a small house on mango street. The story takes place in chicago, Esperanza and her five other family members live.Her family is very poor and they don't live the american dream. Her family faces many obstacles while trying to pursue The American Dream, these obstacles include poverty, language barriers, and homesickness.
The most challenging struggle was poverty, when moving to a different country it usually takes a lot of money. so when you get to the country you don’t have much money left. In the story Esperanza says many things that imply poverty. Esperanza said “they told us one day we would move into a real house with running water and pipes that work” which is cited from document 1. This quote from the story says that running water and pipes that work would be a luxury, so considering most houses have such things this quote proves that they are living in a very poor neighborhood. Therefore, poverty is a struggle for not only esperanza and her family but for everyone trying to live the American Dream. …show more content…
