Time Unifies Community which Gives Identity
Tik tok, tik tok, the time counts down, forever running, never stopping, and never changing. The communities rise, fall, get taken over, change, rise- completing a never ending cycle following to the beat of time. In the book … And the Earth Did not Devour Him, it exhibits the connection, between time and communities, and how these associations have an effect on the individual identities. It can be argued that time defines community and community gives an individuals identities, therefore, time gives people identity.

“That way they looked more important and the people believed everything they would tell them and invite them into their homes without giving it much thought. I think that down deep they even longed for their children to one day be like them” (Rivera 129). The community did not know any information for these men comparatively, but are willing to place the men’s status and identity higher than their own. Because of this higher, purer identity given to these men, they are able to interact with the community in worse ways and use their identity as a disguise. This is extremely similar to the past text when the boy is staying with a family, Don Laíto and Doña Bone. There was only one food that tasted good at the dinner table: sweet bread. The boy would only want to eat this, but once the boy understood how it was made his opinions changed. “The kneading the dough that made me the sickest… He would look at me to see if I was getting nauseous and he would tell me that this was what all the baker did… I never again ate any of that sweet bread” (Rivera 92). The community shapes and forms the identity of the people similar to how they shape and form the bread. It may seem sweet on the outside, but on the inside it is full of impure acts. The men ended up cheating the families who gave them this identity out of their money. The Community has the power to create a identity of another good or bad. The identity may not represent the truth, which is why we only understand the full identity of the person through the community and has the needed aspect of time as
