A Good Man is Hard to Find, is a short story written by Mary Flannery O’Connor, but she didn’t use her first name Mary. She was a writer of short stories and novels and her writings were filled with dark comedy and violence, usually mixed with moral and theological backgrounds. She was born in Savannah, Georgia on March 25, 1925. Both her parents came from Catholic families and her religion played a huge role in her writings. In the late 1930s, her father developed disseminated lupus. The theme can be about a family as a whole that lacks love for the grandmother. Both of these themes are obvious to any reader, but it does not quite seem to match this author’s depth style way of writing. I believe O’Connor is a moralist who focuses an uncompromising moral eye on the violence and spiritual disorder of the world. By knowing this about the author O’Connor we can look deeper into this story and find morals of two characters as the theme. The two characters are the Grandmother and the Misfit. Even though they are both different as night and day, they both have morals and stands by their morals no matter what. Even though the Grandmother shows to be a victim of rudeness, hostile statements, and dangerous situations, she still stood by her morals regardless of the situations. “She reached out and touched him on the shoulder. “The Misfit sprang back as if a snake had bitten him and shot her three times through the chest.” Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find” is the story of a family’s vacation tragically ended by a murderer and his gang. After a meddlesome Mother/Mother-In-Law/Grandmother tries to insist that the family go to Tennessee instead of Florida, it was in fact through her own insistence that prompted the family stray from the main path in search of some false, lost treasure. This deadly decision caused the family to fall prey to the Misfit. Foreshadowing at the beginning of the story hints to the reader that while on their trip to Florida, this family is destined to cross paths with the Misfit. For example, “Here this fellow that calls himself The Misfit is a loose from the Federal Pen and headed toward Florida and you read here what it says he did to these people.
