I have had a hard time so far in this class. I understand the terms in class, but the language of the articles is over my head sometimes. I finish an article asking what the point of it was or what I learned and I have no answer. I spend the whole time focused on the article and get little out of it. It is not that I do not understand the concepts or need for integrating literacy into subjects. The articles are speaking over my head. I have a hard time finishing one article much less three or four.
Aside from having trouble with the articles, I have no other problem with the course. In some prior courses, they stressed the importance of integrating literacy into other school subjects. It is needed, and even expected in most places. For me, it is understood that literacy should be done, and thus will be done by me. I do not really have any pros or cons on anything we have talked about. I know what content area literacy is for the most part. I understand the basic terms. I do not have any strong views on the topic.
As teachers, we should be careful about how we chose texts for our students. If we are not careful to preview a text before we include it in our library or even a text set to be used, there are many issues that

This is important to helping us know our students better. We studied a number of the theorists in our Intro Block. Knowing the theories can give us insight into our students and help us know them better, not just as individuals but as students who are growing and developing. There are multiple layers of information that a teacher has access to which help him or her to get the whole picture of who that student. In learner development, theories of not just Piaget and Erikson, but others, provide another layer of information to help us get to know students. It helps us understand some of their thinking and motivation behind some of their actions and attitudes in the

Reading is undervalued in today’s society. Not many students understand the importance of reading and how useful it is in life. When I was, younger reading was never my strongest subject. “Rhetorical Reading Strategies and the Construction of Meaning” from Haas & Flowers wants us to understand the true meaning of reading and writing, how we need to see reading as a “constructive rather than a receptive process” (Haas & Flower 167). Targeting students and teachers as well, Haas and Flower managed to develop an article that explains and shows us some misconception of our daily writing life that should be known by everybody. They make questions towards students asking if they really gather all the information that is available in the articles, and if they are available to print them on their writings. Some of the students use a strategy called “rhetorical reading” to get the most out of the texts but only experienced readers managed to use this skill as supposed to. Freshman readers and experienced readers are mentioned and evaluated with the same article, comparing their results, Haas & Flower observed that experienced readers could get more juice out of the readings due to the experience and the previous knowledge in the area.…

This week’s reading was the first three chapters of, “Do I Really Have to Teach Reading?” this was an interesting reading. The book expanded on perspectives about teaching reading that I had never thought were important for an adolescent reader to know. “Do I Really Have to Teach Reading,” is an instructional comprehension book that’s primary focus is to teach effective reading strategies. The first three chapters introduce basic ways for teachers to use in order to help their students understand readings, even if the subject is not English/ Language Arts.…

1.5 Literacy Program There is an increased attention for immigrants and English-language learners (ELL) in the United States. The generation 1.5 are overlooked and misidentified in the high school level. This generation is of students who are familiar with the U.S culture because they were raised here and many were born in the United States. Even though, they appear to be native in speaking English, they are less skilled in academics, literacy, and especially in writing in their first language.…

Literacy and I have a love-hate relationship. I want to love it, but at the same time, I hate how hard it is for me to read and write. I didn’t learn how to read until I was out of elementary school. It wasn’t until freshman year of high school that I learned how to write a structured paragraph. My teachers didn’t teach me how to read and write.…

I completely agree with the statement, “If you think you’re not a reading teacher, think again!” All content areas have a language and involve some varying degrees of reading which includes domain specific vocabulary words, sentence structure, text features, etc. that students need to know how to navigate in order to fully learn and comprehend the text. For example, in math students need to understand what terms such as “greater than” and “all together” mean in order to solve word problems. Although a math teacher is not specifically teaching decoding or comprehension, they are responsible for teaching students the language of math so that they are able to fully understand that content.…

On the first day of class we discussed the topic of literacy. After a moment of self-reflection and time together discussing keywords and ideas we came up with a brief definition: the ability to read and write. (Hodges. 2015) There are many pros’ and cons to defining literacy because every student is going to be on a different reading level, their thought process and awareness will be different; not to mention there are so many components of literacy that the true definition will vary per student. One of the biggest factors in determining success in student’s literacy skills is their confidence.…

Literacy is everywhere in our lives, but literacy isn’t just the act of reading. It is also a complex and intricate process of understanding and learning what you have read. Some of the questions we will ask and answer have to deal with traits of a good reader, what contributes to comprehension, and what we should do to comprehend better. Have you ever finished reading a passage and couldn’t recall what it was about or how it pertained to what you were learning? Don’t worry, we have all been there.…

After reading this article, it has emphasized that incorporating literacy into mathematics is one thing that needs to happen and not a theoretical thought. Additionally, I noted one way to incorporate literacy into mathematics is to “[encourage students] to link the subject matter with their own lives and contemporary issues” (7). Having the students link the subject matter to their own experiences will help them not only understand the content better, additionally help them remember the knowledge, because they made the connection. Further, as Fisher and Ivey express, “when we suggest that students ought to read and write in every class, we also mean that literacy needs to be facilitated by the teacher as a integral part of instructional time… assigning reading and writing to be accomplished out of class will not do the trick” (8). As the teacher you will have to incorporate literacy into your curriculum, because various students will not do the homework of reading or writing.…
