Reflective Essay: Similarities Between Reading And Writing

When I think about literacy I think of two different parts, reading and writing. Both of which I have had different experiences of. Reflecting off my past experience reading was the more challenging one out of the two. I have always enjoyed writing and learning how to express myself on paper. For those reasons, I will be exploring both of these literacies separately.
Ten years ago, me being around eight years old, sitting in a reading circle with my fellow classmates. It comes to be my turn to take on the next paragraph of the book we were reading that day. My palms were forming beads of sweat, as I draw my eyes over the text making sure I can execute all of the words that I’m about to read, and reciting the words, “no mistakes”, “read fast”, “don’t mess up”. As I’m sitting in my dorm trying to come up with an expectable answer to this question, I think, “Am I considered a good writer?”. How do you even know if you are a good writer? It isn’t too hard, right? You have a beginning, middle and end. That’s what the education system first teaches you and then they get into having a thesis and a theme and developing characters. But what do you have to do to be a good writer? According to, the third edition book, “Writing about Writing”, on page three it states, “Writing isn’t about the content; it’s about correctness.” Previous to that statement the author goes on to explain that that is what all high school graduates come out thinking. This is true, when you are young they burn all these rules and guidelines you have to follow and as a child you don’t know how restricted your ideas really are. The teachers would tell you what to write and basically how to write it. But, it is understandable because If the education system lets students have zero barriers and let them write about whatever, children wouldn’t have any literacy
