When I think about literacy I think of two different parts, reading and writing. Both of which I have had different experiences of. Reflecting off my past experience reading was the more challenging one out of the two. I have always enjoyed writing and learning how to express myself on paper. As I’m sitting in my dorm trying to come up with an expectable answer to this question, I think, “Am I considered a good writer?”. How do you even know if you are a good writer? The teachers would tell you what to write and basically how to write it. But, it is understandable because If the education system lets students have zero barriers and let them write about whatever, children wouldn’t have any literacy

When most students think of writing, they think of strenuous literature essays for an english class, or five page research papers with deadlines and headaches. I live for those headaches. A writer is not someone who simply puts words onto a page. They put emotion within the words, spread messages and promote ideas. To write is to incase a memory in glass, detailing every single moment down to the pattern of the snowflakes that fell last Christmas.…

It just seems easier to just push writing away, maybe because I feel I don’t have the confidence on what it takes to be a “good writer”. But who is a good writer or what does it mean to me to be a good writer? Complete sentences, punctuation, capitalization, grammar, transition, emotions, writing format, being interested in a topic, grabbing the reader’s attention, a theme, these are all what I consider to be what good writing is or what a good writer does. I hope that as I take this class that my role and expectations involve learning how to use all of those aspects in my writing for in the future.…

To be completely honest I have mixed feelings about writing and I don’t really have any memorable experiences that made me feel this way, it is just the experiences that I have had with the subject while trying to apply it. I struggle with what to write down mostly and creativity in general and I don’t really excel at any part of it. If I were to say I “excel” at anything it would be revising my work and adding to it. At the end of the semester I hope that I have relearned some key writing elements that lack of practice has caused me to lose.…

Throughout this semester of English 101, writing has become more of a skill than a struggle. Writing was a challenge that I dreaded when I chose to be in the course, nonetheless with time, I learned from my mistakes and was able to improve. This course made me very doubtful on whether I could be capable of even writing a paper that would provide me with a decent grade, but at the same time made me push myself in my writing technique. I have always considered my relationship with writing to be very insignificant. Although I enjoy spending time verbally expressing my thoughts and feelings to others, it becomes difficult when these thoughts and feelings are expressed through writing. Throughout my adolescent years, I would often receive feedback for my writing given by the teacher in the form of a grade. Being unable to effectively organize my thoughts and ideas into words and sentences, I would feel reluctant to continue writing confidently whenever I received an undesirable grade.…

To me, writing has always been busy work and something that teachers only used to create grades. My writing experience in high school was very limited to one category in: practice AP essays. The writing I did in class was always preparing for AP exams and was very fact based. Most essays, such as history, were only used to show that I knew the material and weren’t graded on how good the writing was. I didn’t feel like I had any freedom to stray away from the format that the AP graders expected because I didn’t want that to affect my score.…
