Literacy In The Workplace

During my nineteen years on this earth and my fourteen to fifteen years in school, I have been exposed to many different forms of literacy. Areas I have been or am literate in are reading, writing, music, social media, and workplace. Besides reading and writing, workplace literacy is the biggest area I am literate in. This is my biggest area because I have worked the same job since the summer before my junior year of high school in 2013. This job is in a veterinarian’s office and I would, with full confidence, say that this isn’t the normal job of a high schooler. I say this based on the amount of work done and the knowledge workers need to possess.
As mentioned earlier, this isn’t a normal job. It’s a job where only my sister and the Vet

Going along with that, no one there but a select few are going to school to be vets or do anything involving science or the medical field. So, what’s the point of me giving a breakdown of who all works in this vet’s office? My point is, despite working there in high school and/ or not going to school to do anything involving science or the medical field, the workers there need to be literate in the terminology, skills, and mindset required to get the job done. That’s why I choose this form of literacy in my life to focus on. I started working there in 2013 without any knowledge of anything dealing with animals, besides anything basic and that they’re cute. Now 4 years later I’ve learned things most people wouldn’t know unless they’re in some sort of medical field. An example of something I’ve learned is how heat …show more content…
Hedrick. He’s the one who hired me, kept me there, and allowed me to move up in positions. Since he hired me I got the chance to be there in that place and learn things I wouldn’t have otherwise learned at any other typical high school job at McDonalds. Being that he’s the one who tells us when to move up, he’s the one who encouraged me to learn the things in the middle that I mentioned before. This position change moved me from basic work in the back, to more challenging things that have to be done with care. For example, if I wasn’t taught proper nutrition for cats and dogs I wouldn’t be able to inform other people about proper nutrition for their cats and dogs. An example of using this knowledge in my life concerns all my, used to be overweight, male indoor cats. We used to just feed them Meow Mix from Food Lion. I didn’t know that Meow Mix and other foods with imported ingredients cause bladder stones in indoor, overweight, male cats. Now I’m aware how awful that food is so we buy food for our cats and dog from a company my work sponsors called Science Diet. If it wasn’t for one of the prescription diet foods called s/d (for bladder stones) one of my cats who got bladder stones would’ve needed $2000 surgery to live. So, that’s a major thing my boss introduced me to and gained my knowledge on that I am incredibly thankful for. Since this seemingly miracle food was introduced to me I can tell other people about it and
