Literacy In The Classroom

It is proven positive that when authentic text is used with students, they are extremely enthused, which provides a sense of accomplishment when a text is understood, and it inspires students to read more (Berardo, 2006). Because of this, my classroom too is filled with different types of text exposing them to authentic text relating to the real world; however, I sometimes truly struggle with how to encourage a few students to further read. Literacy is something that we do every day; it is a primary part of our daily lives. Sometimes I think many teachers take it very much for granted and normally presumed it to be something that everyone can do. My overall wish is for students to not only be willing to add reading strategies in areas where they lacked prior experiences, but also demonstrated willingness to grow in areas familiar to them. …show more content…
After all, it is true; the reason for reading is influenced very much by the purpose for reading, and in order for students to be successful in reading, it is imperative for all parties to have a shared goal for students (Samuels &Farstrup,

The author, Timothy Shanahan, wrote “You Want me to Read What?!” which was published in November of 2013 in the Educational Leadership publication, and he makes a valid argument that informational text is as important as literary readings in the English classroom. Shanahan builds on his standing with facts clearly built from his research, citing compelling facts and data. Shanahan’s “You Want me to Read What?!” effectively persuades that teaching informational text and literary readings are equally important by presenting an optimistic view combined with strong evidence, research and statistics.…

“People don 't realize how a man 's whole life can be changed by one book” (Malcolm X). Books are beneficial in an individual’s vocabulary, memorization, and perspectives in life. In “On Being 17, Bright, and Unable to Read” by David Raymond, Hunger of Memory by Richard Rodriguez, and “My Alma Mater” from The Autobiography of Malcolm X by Malcolm X, all the authors struggled with something particular in literacy, but they all had different motives for improving their reading and writing. As seen in the three articles, each author had their own purpose in why literacy can be a good advantage and figured out different strategies to help ameliorate themselves. If you have obstacles which prevent you from reading or writing effectively, finding…

In his article “What is literacy?”, James Paul Gee maintains that the definition of discourse: “a socially accepted association among the ways of using language, of thinking, and of acting that can be used to identify oneself as a member of a socially meaningful group or ‘social network’”. In the reading, discourse talk into production of goods in a society “dominant discourse” and assent to talk about those groups that have disagreement when using them as “dominant groups”. When people discuss something with other, they are not using their own ideas. At the same time, he goes on to explain that there are many points can make about discourse, such as the direction and significant in term. Important to realize, the author organizes discourse that…

Yes, I have worked closely to start Adult Literacy Night Classes in my neighborhood (Dhaiya, Dhanbad) in India. Majority of the adult population in my community were illiterate. These were the people who worked on daily wages and earned less than $1.50 every day. They were not able to count money, read or write and were exploited in so many ways, many times by their employers. The goal was to educate this working class, so they can perform basic tasks of reading and writing to opening an account in the bank.…

One assumption that I would have made in day three would be that students know how to write a well written paragraph with grammar alone, not including the point of view they will be including in the paragraph. During eighth grade they know how to write and read, but there may still be a need to clarify the components of sentences and paragraph form. The reason for my assumption that the students could write a sufficient paragraph was that in seventh grade students are able to CCSS.ELA-Literacy. My journey with literacy has been a part of my life and began before I even entered school. During my early days you would say I was a “repeater”. I repeated things that I would hear from my parents and people that were around me all the time. Some of them were good to say and some not so good to say. My parents always sat down and read to me.…

Each day is a new learning day, whether is professional or personal we end the day with a new reflection of our learning. Based on this, teaching beginning literacy learners requires major part of our day. The goal is that by the end of the school year those beginning literacy learners succeed and reach to the establish grade level by the state. Therefore, as an educator I need to be in constant movement, learning new strategies to help them succeed in each lesson. During Mr. Recio’s (Laureate Education, 2014a) interaction with his learners, it clearly can be seen how the exchange of oral language provides the learners vocabulary to increase their knowledge.…

During this class, I've learned a bunch of new concepts. It was interesting to see how these new concepts were helping me to give some meaning to words like Kernel, virtual memory, buses, system clock,... that appears when booting my computer. Specially, this information is useful to change my computer configuration and assign resources according with my needs by manipulating the motherboard. Unfortunately, all this new knowledge is not going to help me with my major, nevertheless this class was worthy for my life, yet now I'm a computer literacy citizen.…

The child that I chose to observe turned out to be the most interested in literacy out of the entire class. This four year old girl came into classroom and was offered the option of joining the carpet where the boys were playing with blocks. She did not want to join the boys on the carpet to play with blocks, instead she was given the idea from Ms. Christy to bring a book over for her to read. The child ran over to the book shelf to pick out a book. You could tell she was happy to do this.…

Aha! Paper Coming into this course, I had many preconceived notions as to how reading what taught and how students responded to this instruction. I thought phonics was the key factor to teaching kids how to read, that nonfiction texts were meant solely for higher level reading, reading assignments were best determined based upon reading level only, answering questions after reading was best for comprehension, and that our current academic system fails to actually teach kids how to read. Throughout the course there have been several instances during class and online sessions that have changed some of these notions. There was also one notion that seemed to be supported during the course.…

Like any teenager, I found myself to be in a troublesome time during a few weeks in high school. I found myself to feel completely alone even though I was not a loner. Eventually, the lingering feeling of emptiness soon passed over and I became fine again. Afterwards, I wondered why I had felt alone during this time if I was socializing and interacting with others in school and at home. I came to terms that I did not feel as one whole person but as someone with multiple personalities and quirks.…

When reflecting over the activity given to me, I made the realization that I act alone and do the same activity when I read textbooks or even article because I am not a strong independent reader. I struggle to fully comprehend what I am reading sometimes it may come down to simple little key factors such as not being interested in the reading, or I could be distracted at the time, and maybe the reading doesn’t feel entertaining to me. These are all thought and ideas I got from reflecting over this assignment to determine what I feel sometimes as a student myself. So I know similar thought are going through my student’s minds. Though by doing activities like the “Say Something Strategy” when we are giving a reading assignment as educators, we will be able to see some of the difficulties that our students may be facing with reading.…
