Personal Essay About My Autobiography

Growing up in the small town of Tappahannock, Virginia, I figure I learned to read and write just as most other kids would have. I have early memories of my mother and my father teaching me how to write my own name and how to read small sections of children’s books. I experienced a normal childhood for the most part, and learned how to read and write just as all the other young boys and girls in school, but I don’t feel I became literate until later on in my life. My father being a firefighter, and my mother a nurse, the use of fire/EMS jargon was common. I became literate due to several people; my father taught me from a young age all he knew about fighting fires and the jargon necessary for the job, my mother still teaches me jargon/terms for nursing. I can attribute my literacy in the fire/EMS field, not only to my parents, but also my mentors, Kathy Jeter and Jonathan Sydnor, because of them, I have become literate in the EMS field, and am on track to further my literacy in the nursing world. Literacy in my life comes within my extensive knowledge of the fire and EMS field. I grew up with a father that was a firefighter, and a mother as a nurse. I grew up around the emergency setting, as well as the medical field. My father taught me everything he knew since I can remember. He would tell me stories about how he would get called to a structure fire, and carry my mother and me along. My father would fight the fire while my mother and the infant me would sit in the car and wait. There are vivid memories of how my father would take me for a ride in the firetruck through a parade, and all I can remember is having a big smile as I heard the loud air horn blow. That was my childhood; that is how I grew up to be who I am
