Literacy Analysis
While the primary definition of literacy is centered around our ability to read, write and perhaps spell, when I think of the words literacy, I think of basic knowledge or skills as it relates to a particular subject. Take for example computer literacy or driving literacy. Growing up, literacy was something that was never defined to me in school or at home. I’ve heard the word used in so many different contexts that one day I finally decided to look it up in the dictionary. Although I still consider my literacy development as an ongoing project, it has had three major stages: the introductory, the developmental, and the fine-tuning stage.

After high school, I got a job as a Network and System Administrator at a Hedge Fund company. At the same time, I started an Associate’s Degree in software programming. One of the first courses I took was a technical writing class. This was a very influential class as it helped me to better understand the concept of writing for different audiences. I developed a type of writing that was similar to the way a customer service email is written, always clear and concise. Stage one, which is like an introductory stage, dates back to kindergarten when I was being thought to form and write letters. Stage two is like a developmental stage. It was the most important part of my literacy development. It encompasses from post kindergarten all the way up to high school. During this stage I learned words, basic sentences, and essays as well as reading. I have had the program similar to “Hooked on Phonics”, started a reading encyclopedias and books, etc. Finally, stage three, which is like a fine tuning and expansion stage. This stage is still in progress. It deals with me turning into a better writer by learning new and proper techniques of the writing process. Hopefully at the end of this course I would have taken another leap forward in becoming a better
