Literacy Connections Reflection Paper

Improved Essays
Another exciting year for us at Literacy Connections has come to an end. This year is remarkable for so many reasons:
• In July 2015, Literacy Connections became the lead agency of the Hudson Valley Literacy Consortium serving six counties: Dutchess, Columbia, Greene, Orange, Sullivan and Ulster. We are extremely excited about this new role and look forward to strengthening our collaboration with our sister organizations and exploring all the possibilities that this new role offers.
• Thanks to the Dyson Foundation, the Hudson Valley Literacy Consortium (HVLC) is close to wrapping up its collaboration analysis with an independent consultant. The study’s conclusion (in a few months) should outline the possible paths that could lead the HVLC to savings, efficiency improvements

We are able to more accurately track students’ progress and educational gains.
• Our children’s reading program, Book Buddies, has expanded to Orange County. It is serving over 30 students in two Newburgh schools. This year, the program has served over 300 children in Dutchess and Orange Counties with an astounding 94% of students showing improvement in reading and comprehension.
• We have seen (with great joy, I might add) the benefits of volunteerism displayed this year more than ever. Through feedback from informal gatherings, meetings and in-services, volunteers have expressed an increased social connectedness, improved well-being and a feeling of accomplishment that only the selfless act of volunteering can give. All of this the above is possible thanks to the Dyson Foundation and other funders.
We are humbled and encouraged by the generosity of all our funders, supporters and volunteers, and the progress of students.
Thank you for your

Beginning from grade school through middle and high school, we learn how to read and write as we grow. More importantly, we learn how to grab and hold onto many things; the illusions that we aim to achieve, called dreams. The drive to push and better yourself to grasp onto unexpected possibilities, we call opportunities. The belief and confidence that you hold within you, we call faith. Independence as your hope, in all experiences that you’ll be able to make something towards your future.…

In his article “What is literacy?”, James Paul Gee maintains that the definition of discourse: “a socially accepted association among the ways of using language, of thinking, and of acting that can be used to identify oneself as a member of a socially meaningful group or ‘social network’”. In the reading, discourse talk into production of goods in a society “dominant discourse” and assent to talk about those groups that have disagreement when using them as “dominant groups”. When people discuss something with other, they are not using their own ideas. At the same time, he goes on to explain that there are many points can make about discourse, such as the direction and significant in term. Important to realize, the author organizes discourse that…

In Deborah Brandt’s Sponsors of Literacy she speaks of so called sponsors in which compel one to become a more literate being. But you may ask, who doesn’t want to be literate, it doesn’t matter. Everyone has these said sponsors to push them forward to becoming a more brilliant human being. Brandt writes in a formal informational essay genre pushing towards the notion that sponsors of literacy are a real concept. Now whether it’s for the sponsors good or the sponsored, that’s a totally different topic.…

Prior to opening Content Area Reading: Literacy and Learning Across the Curriculum (Vacca et al., 2014), I had never thought of literacy as something that was vital to a high school math class. I was under the assumption that math was comprised of working through problems with students to find the solution, but I now recognize that there is greater knowledge to teach and learn. Chapter one of Content Area Reading opened my eyes to the importance of teaching content literacy. A study conducted by Harold Herder (1964) demonstrates this point, for he found that “students who used ‘study guides’ to read a physics text significantly outperformed those students who did not use guides to read the content under study”(Vacca, 2014, p. 18). Students who were assisted in understanding how to read the material comprehended a greater amount of what they were reading.…

We spent a whole day at my school doing simple tasks such as garden cleaning, moving old furniture, covering graffiti, repainting old walls and stairwells. In the end, volunteering had a huge impact not only on me but also the community around me. It enabled me to connect with my community and make my school a better place. I realized that helping out with the simplest and smallest tasks can make a drastic difference in society. If we were to lose physical space, people would surrender their desire to obtain public good.…

For those who learned to read and write during the campaign, and for those who do so in Cuban schools today, literacy and numeracy are powerfully linked to specific political content. While this is not unique to Cuba, the relatively recent establishment of a universal nationalized curriculum provides a remarkably discrete period for analysis in which specific ideological objectives were disseminated in a highly transparent way. This article has sketched the politics and content of revolutionary education in Cuba over the past half century, arguing that in effect, the literacy campaign has never ended and indeed continues in earnest today. Working with the notion of literacy, broadly conceived, this article argues the campaign was the vanguard…
