I chose to do my research paper on literacy. Literacy and life goes hand in hand. There is not too many things that I can think of that does not require reading or writing. Even though reading and writing may seem like a basic skill there are a large amount of people in the world who are illiterate. My goal in this paper is to show how literacy is an essential part of life.
Literacy means having the ability to read and write, and being illiterate means you are unable to read and write. “32 million adults in the U.S. can't read. That's 14 percent of the population. 21 percent of adults in the U.S. read below a 5th grade level, and 19 percent of high school graduates can't read”(Huffington post). His views and opinions on the world was so articulate and well-spoken it’s hard to believe he didn’t finish school. “Born on May 19, 1925, in Omaha, Nebraska, Malcolm X was a prominent black nationalist leader who served as a spokesman for the Nation of Islam during the 1950s and '60s”(Biography). Like many other illiterate people Malcom X actually attended school. He attended school all the way up until middle school. In his school he was the only black student, and eventually he dropped out at fifteen years old. Because he wasn’t properly educated he couldn’t do the basic things like read or write. At 39 years old he was sentenced to prison and it was there where he developed an interest in Literacy. In his autobiography “Malcom X” Malcom stated, “I saw that the best thing I could do was get ahold of a dictionary to study, to learn some words. I was lucky enough to reason also that I should try to improve my penmanship. It was sad. I couldn’t even write in a straight line” (The Norton Field Guide to Writings with Readings).
