Personal Narrative: My Literacy

Growing up in an Indian family, literacy has always been one of the most important things. The only education my dad ever received was a high school diploma. My mom, on the other hand, was fortunate enough to go to college. Being the oldest child in the family, my parents held high expectations of me. As a famous saying goes, “Always my mother, forever my friend.” My mom taught me almost everything I know. Ranging from how to tie my shoelaces, to how to ride a bike, to how to cook and clean, and much more. I was extremely lucky to not only receive a great education at school, but also have a second educator at home. My mom’s responsible for one very important aspect of my life, which is my literacy. Not only did she teach me how to read and write, she also taught me how to communicate properly. From an early age, I remember my mom reading bedtime stories to me every night before she tucked me in. My favorite books to read as a child were Dr. Seuss’ “Cat in the Hat” books. Random surprises of books from my parents always put a big smile on my face. I felt like I was on top of the world. I realized that reading books didn’t make me seem like a loser. In fact, everyone thought I was extremely smart. During seventh grade, my school held a reading competition called “Strive for 25.” Students were expected to read twenty-five books over a period of time and take a test on each. In order to get an award and a picture in the newspaper, the student must’ve passed all the tests with an average of eighty percent or higher. At first I second guessed myself and didn’t think I would be able to do it, but my mom told me otherwise. She not only encouraged me to read, but she also took the time out to read those books with me. My mom sparked my interest and passion for reading all over

Only some books pertained to me, ones filled with adventure, interesting characters, happy endings, but most importantly, ones that were easy to read. Most of the books I enjoyed were categorized by my mom as “junk books.” I explained to myself that if I had to stop after every sentence and locate a word in the dictionary, reading wouldn’t be very fun for me, a middle school girl.…

Throughout elementary school, it was as if both my mother and I had to learn English. Slowly, but surely, we persevered and began to practice and master the beast of a language with its complex vocabulary and special “laws” of grammar. Persevering through the seemingly unconquerable moments allowed my mother to get better paying jobs and eventually lead her to buying us plane tickets to Peru to visit my grandparents.…

She instilled in me the value of education and she sacrificed her time and comfort to ensure that I acquired the best education. During this period, my country provided its citizens with a low standard government-sponsored high school education. While other low-income parents jumped at this opportunity, my mom refused to allow her children become victims of an unfair socioeconomic system where the elite were able to attain the best quality of education. Despite the financial hardships, my mom took out loans from her place of work to pay the high-priced tuition of private high school where I would obtain the best education. After working for nine hours and preparing dinner for her family, my mother created time to assist me with homework and studying.…
