I am writing to endorse Dr. Lisa Prevette’s promotion to a tenured facility position in the University of St. Thomas chemistry department. I have had the pleasure to know Dr. Prevette in many respects including lecturer and mentor during over course of my undergraduate education. I have witnessed Dr. Prevette’s teaching from the student and teaching assistant perspectives and she has made a tremendous impact in the lives of her students during that time. She has been a catalyst for my success in chemistry at UST and, today in my graduate work, the lessons she taught continue to play a fundamental role in my development as an independent scientist.
As a student, I have experienced …show more content…
Prevette’s unique ability to relate the course’s concepts to solving real-world problems inspired me to think about how the course information could be applied to solving real-world problems in a research setting. I felt free to apply my new knowledge, and I was inspired to see how this knowledge was applied by professional scientists. I was inspired to study past the textbook and dig into scientific literature, which consequently served as material to share with Dr. Prevette. In this respect she has served as one of my mentors and, in hindsight, these conversations were critical to my development as a student at UST and ultimate decision to become a …show more content…
In her chemistry for engineering course she had the engineering students pick a chemistry topic relevant to them and present their topic to the class. A buzz of chatter filled the class room on the day of the presentations, as the engineers were sharing their cool chemistry topics. It was so cool to witness how much more interested the engineers became in chemistry when they learned how they could leverage it to improve something they cared about. After this day, the class cared more, wanted to learn more, and wanted to talk about chemistry more—they were
