7th January 2013, Lionel Messi became the first four-time winner of the FIFA Player of the Year award after shattering German prolific footballer Gerd Muller’s world record of 85 goals in a calendar year by scoring 91 goals last year for Barcelona and Argentina (Aspin, 2013). Merely a year after that, Lionel Messi became the world highest paid footballer after received almost £1million per week (Mcleman, 2015). It is not surprising that he managed to earn enormous wages. In fact, in recent studies carried out by (Boyle, n.d.), shows that salaries that have been paid to top footballers risen 1508% in the past 18 years which is from 1992 to 2010. According to Cunningham (2013), the increase in the percentage of footballers’ wages from 1961 until 2013 is 1,439,900% which is more than a million times over. The question rising is that are football players being paid excessively? It is proposed that salaries earn by footballers nowadays are fitting with what they are doing for living because they have to make a life decision to become a …show more content…
They are ready to take the risks by making an important life decision to become a football player since they aged 7 years old although they know that they might find failure as the consequences. Not to mention that footballers only have 8 years average span of time during their career to accumulate money for their remaining life after retirement. Even more, there were some of the footballers involved in a controversial collision and almost facing death. Indeed, football is a dangerous career as there are some very boisterous, strong and large players and there is a chance for a soccer player to get a critical injury. In a way they should get paid for the time they spent working and entertaining football fans. Therefore, we need to support and encourage them instead of criticising
