A good story is not just about the protagonist and antagonist, it is also about its minor characters, they help the character grow, change, and reach his or her goals. A lot of the Lion King’s minor characters are based on the ones from Hamlet such as Timon and Pumbaa being based on Guildenstern and Rosencrantz, and Nala being based on Ophelia. Even though the Lion King’s characters are made for children they are superior to their Hamlet counterparts. Oh how to start this paragraph? With the obvious! Timon and Pumbaa are better characters than Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. Timon and Pumbaa grow and change, they have layers, while Rosencrantz and Guildenstern just stay the same level of goofballs the entire time. Look at the facts, the majority of what Ophelia is how she is seen by a man, whether that man be her father, brother, or Hamlet, there is not a lot of personality outside of that for her “My lord, he hath importun'd me with love In honourable fashion”(act 1 scene 3). But with Nala you see her have adventures when she was a child, and when Scar takes over she goes off in search of a way to stop him. Nala is what Ophelia could have been Helping the male characters achieve his goals, while still having her own. “Lay her i' the earth;-- And from her fair and unpolluted flesh May violets spring!--I tell thee, churlish priest, A ministering angel shall my sister be When thou liest howling”(act 5 scene 1). Instead of what happened with Ophelia being killed for the sole purpose of motivating Laertes and Hamlet into action. Nala is a character with her own motivation and goals while Ophelia is basically just another prop in the play. The Lion King may be a movie that was meant to be for children but it’s character are more developed than its source material. The Lion King is a wonderful adaption for Hamlet that gave it’s own
