Link Crew Leadership Traits

I have been called the “mom” of the friend group, the “mother hen” that is always looking out for her chicks, prepped with bandaids, hand sanitizer, and an extra pencil for loaning. Link Crew took that characteristic I have always had and bolted, floating high into the sky like the helium balloon whose ribbon easily slipped through a tiny toddler’s fist.
Through Link Crew training, I learned that you don’t have to be extroverted to be a great leader. Sometimes the best leaders are those who speak less and listen more, the ones who observe before they act, the ones who lead by example as well as instruction. When I initially began Boy Scouts, I largely depended on my brother and his friends for help and assistance. Eventually, my brother and his friends around his age graduated, and while many moved on to serve as adult leaders, all of them eventually left for college. With this large amount of support missing from my usual routine, I felt lost for a significant amount of time, before I participated in a Philmont trek in the summer before my freshman year of high school. During the Philmont trek, as the youngest member of the crew, I felt highly unprepared due to my overall lack of experience with high adventure and large amounts of leadership; however, despite developing a blister on the first day, I found solace with my crew as they taught me valuable skills that would help me survive the journey. From their exemplary leadership and teachings, I quickly learned not only how to help myself, but also how to assist and guide others as a leader.…

To be a leader, one must first earn the trust and respect of one’s peers and become someone that they would listen to. As a petite, easily distracted female, I often have trouble becoming a person that others listen to outside of the classroom. Thus, becoming this leader and being elected and inducted as the president of the York Suburban Trojan Theatre Club is my most impressive achievement in leadership. At first, people did not know who I was, so I was able to build a reputation for myself by becoming the props crew lead in all but official title. Still, when backstage, I have a reputation as a leader.…

I earned my first leadership role at the age of two. At that age, I became my sister’s role model. It was up to me to teach her the tricks of the trade for everything-- from tying her shoes to studying for her first math test. Although I didn’t have any designated leadership positions during my early years of high school, it was the similarly intimate, accidental moments of leadership that colored my participation in my extracurriculars.…

In the words of John F. Kennedy, “Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.” As my final days of high school are coming to a close, I’ve come to recognize, like President Kennedy, that leadership and learning go hand in hand. Learning shapes how you lead as a person, and I can attest to that through my senior year in the Montour Spartan Marching Band. This marching band season, I applied and became the section leader for the flutes and piccolos.…

The aim of this paper is to take the teachings, experiences, learnings and knowledge gained throughout my experiences during the 2015 Haskayne wilderness retreat (retreat), and apply them to uncover the foundations required to become a leader and what is required of a responsible leader in the context of sustainability in today’s business environment. Furthermore, I will offer my opinions on the key leadership take a ways I learnt while on the retreat, and how these lessons can be operationalized and put into practice personally and professionally. Throughout the week at the retreat I came to a realization that in order to be a leader, oneself must inherently be a leader themselves. A leader can do so in its simplest form by being completely…

Leadership is a characteristic that has not always come naturally to me, despite the fact that I enjoy talking to and working with people. I just never considered myself a leader. At the end of my junior year, I applied and interviewed to become photo editor. Being photo editor this year has given me the courage to take control and learn how to give direction to others.…

Potential Vice-President of the Class of 2018 As stated by John C. Maxwell, “A leader is on who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” Through my vice-presidency during my sophomore year in high school, multiple band leadership roles, and experience with assisting children during Vacation Bible School as a group leader for various summers, I have become a skilled leader. Additionally, I tend to be known as the kind of student who is looked up to by many due to my high grades, my caring personality, my determination, and my ability to follow instructions.…

The leading of a team or group is not a simple task but involves real life skills that take time, thinking and commitment. The role of leadership is an essential aspect of an organization since it can determine the difference between success and failure. “Although leaders are gifted in different ways, with different personalities and varying skill sets, all leaders can grow, become more skillful, and become more competent so that they can achieve greater effectiveness” (Ledlow & Coppola, 2014, pp. 10). At times, leadership may seem overwhelming and complicated, but by concentrating on specific fundamentals they will find that they can guide the team with the assurance and competence. There no one style of leadership, in fact, there are several…

In middle school, I found myself to be more quiet, shy, and less outspoken than my peers. I joined all the same clubs and had the same interests as my peers, such as student council and National Junior Honors Society, but my introverted personality kept me from exploring new leadership roles. As I finished middle school and began my high school career, I brought my introverted personality with me. As first semester progressed, I joined clubs in school that encouraged an open mind and voice, specifically Key Club International, the world's largest, student-led, community service organization. In Key Club, I met students with open minds and strong leadership qualities.…

Collaboration is the key component to many successful organizations, teams, and practices in our world. Creating a collaborative culture can be defined in many ways.
