I have been called the “mom” of the friend group, the “mother hen” that is always looking out for her chicks, prepped with bandaids, hand sanitizer, and an extra pencil for loaning. Link Crew took that characteristic I have always had and bolted, floating high into the sky like the helium balloon whose ribbon easily slipped through a tiny toddler’s fist. Through Link Crew training, I learned that you don’t have to be extroverted to be a great leader. Sometimes the best leaders are those who speak less and listen more, the ones who observe before they act, the ones who lead by example as well as instruction. Leading wide-eyed freshmen around an entirely new building and watching their expressions transform from nervousness and anxiety to excitement…

A leader is someone who leads a group, while an effective leader is someone who not only leads, but also listens. To me, the Rabbi at my synagogue, Rabbi Mark, is an effective leader. During a sermon at Yom Kippur services, Rabbi Mark stated, “Sometimes we need to stop and listen to what others have to say.” Even if we disagree with a person or we are in a hurry, it still important to stop and listen to others perspectives. Once we learn about others perspectives we can truly show compassion for others and become effective leaders.…

A leader should be someone you look up to and who does the right thing. Anyone can be a leader, but to be a good leader you must be honest, respectful, kind and you must take responsibility of your actions whether they are right or wrong. Leadership and service go hand in hand. Leaders must serve the people they are leading. If a leader does not give back to the people he or she serves they are likely not doing a very good job of showing others how to act responsibly or what values are necessary to making their environment better.…

However, there is a lot that entails to be a leader that I did not considered before. I used to think that the most important part of been a leader was to know how to deliver a message to a group of people. If the delivery was effective, then your team would understand what needed to be done and did it. I also thought that many managers were, for the most part, leaders on their own right. I learned in the past six weeks that not only managers are not necessarily leaders but most do not even scratch the surface of what a leader should be.…
