Linear Structure Of The Film, The Maltese Falcon

The film, The Maltese Falcon, was directed by John Huston in 1941. For being a black and white and old film, which I usually do not pay any attention to, it was actually interesting. The unification of the plot was not very well because there were quite a few parts of the film, which I did not understand. I do not know why Ms. O’Shaughnessy lied about her sister being with Mr. Throsby, and her relationship with the famous “Black bird.”To me, her character tied in with the plot only because she was a pathological liar, who killed Detective Archer. The plot was not well explained and the main point of it was that everyone seemed to want the valuable “Black bird.” The title of this film fits appropriately to the actual “acted-out” film because although the film spoke of the treasure as “Black bird,” it was a maltese falcon. The plot of the film revolves around the search of this prized treasure and the problems related to its finding. The film uses linear structure. Personally, I think I like linearly structured films better, but on this certain film, my attention would have been caught more rapidly if it had had a beginning “in the middle of things.” An in medias res beginning …show more content…
Thirsby and Detective Miles and finding the “Black bird.”I do not think that there was one main conflict because mostly each part of the film had its on action-filled fighting scene between Spade and someone else. The most important character is Samuel Spade because he is tied with all of the characters of the story and the major conflicts. Spade was a static character because throughout the film he continued to have the same quirky personality in the most odd situations, such as being drugged and beat. I think he was a flat character because his ignorance and way of brushing off tough situations seemed quite inhuman to me.
