The American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) defines occupations as “Various kinds of life activities in which individuals, groups or populations engage, including activities of daily living, instrumental activities of daily living, rest and sleep, education, work, play, leisure, and social participation” (American Occupational Therapy Association, 2014). Two of the most important occupations that an individual engages in are activities of daily living (ADLs) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs). The term ADL refers to tasks that are almost automatic and involve taking care of one’s own personal health, while the term IADL refers to tasks that involve both the home and the community. (AOTA, 2014). Low vision is a growing health condition that can have a substantial impact on the performance of such daily occupations.…
The nurse will be supportive as she guides that care and assists the patient in regaining normalcy. By applying Orem’s Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory, nurses have a model for offering the nursing care required. It gives nurses a foundation which guides them through theory, concepts and goal setting (Bernier, 2002). The theory is universal for it drives the nursing care no matter what specialty is required to fill the deficit. Ultimately, self-care agency is restored and better patient outcomes obtained.…
Unit 3: Transitions Our lives are composed of transitions. From infancy to childhood to adolescence to adulthood, we are constantly faced with change. How we adjust to these changes define our character and outcome.…
This goal was applied with the nursing intervention of including Mike in the daily breakfast club. Findley (2013) states that there are many health benefits of a breakfast club. It promotes independence as well as engaging the patients socially (para. 6). The breakfast club enabled Mike to independently prepare meals and facilitate the functional use of his affected limb. Because Mike used to thoroughly enjoy preparing meals and house work, this intervention proved to be relevant towards his strengths. The independence that was available to Mike increased his confidence and self-esteem, this was evident when he started looking forward until the next breakfast club.…
As a child, when someone asked what I wanted to be when I grew up I would always answer that I want to help people. I might not have known at the time what the field of occupational therapy entailed, but I now know this is the field that will allow me to achieve my dreams of touching as many lives as I can. I believe that the best way to do great things is to make difference in someone else’s life and to love what you do. I believe that occupational therapy is the way I can truly make a difference and I can’t wait to be part of such a tremendously rewarding and diverse career by working closely with people and helping them progress closer to their goals of living an independent life My interest in occupational therapy began while pursuing…
At baseline measurements, information regarding CVA date, the number of attacks, brain imaging results, brain lesion side, and previous fall histories were recorded. Visuospatial neglect, motor functions, and balance impairments were assessed. The Functional Ambulation Category was used to determine each participant’s patient’s ambulation level. Cognition was tested using the Mini-Mental State Examination(MMSE). All 66 participants were observed at home after being discharged from the rehabilitation hospital.…
Purpose of Study or Research Focus The current rate for falls after orthopedic surgery is 1-3 falls per 1000 patients per day. These fall result in a financial loss for the hospitals as well as a decrease in the health and wellbeing of the patient (Clarke, Timm, Goldberg, & Hattrup, 2011). Hospitals employ numerous ways to determine if a patient is a fall risk. There are also many interventions used with the purpose of fall prevention.…
Cognitive retraining and recognition skills are also performed to enable patients to learn the necessary skills to compensate for and adapt to illness, injuries, or altered states of cognition (GCU media). The cognitive side of the rehabilitation process is assessed for the patient to further their adaptations. Occupational therapy also includes the process of examination, assessment, treatment, and education of patients (Brown & Greenwood, 1999, p. 166). Educated the patients and their families is essential for knowing the duties applied to the professions; therefore, the knowledge of the importance of patient-centered care becomes equally…
In occupational therapy, Model of Human Occupation (MOHO) and Person- Environment- Occupational Performance (PEOP) Model are two fundamental frameworks. MOHO was developed from 1960s onwards by Dr. Gary Kielhofner, which was the first occupation- based model to explain occupation and occupational problems, while PEOP is a client- centred and top- down model, focusing on the relationship between individual, group and community since 1980s. In this essay, these two models will be compared and contrasted in regard to their basic assumption, components and application. To begin with, MOHO and PEOP have different basic assumption.…
Approximately 7.8% of occupational therapy practitioners identified behavioral health as their practice area in 2006 (Claire Foster, personal communication, July 6, 2009). Mental Health is a field that applies to all the areas of occupation. People with disabilities such as Schizophrenia, PTSD, Major Depression or Bipolar Disorder can feel as weakened or immobilized as a person with physical disabilities. However, articles were published claiming patients have improved mentally and physically, despite a limited number of those specialized in mental…
Physical therapy is a dynamic and exciting health care profession that helps people with important aspects of the healing process, whether they are in pain and in discomfort due to injury or any other problems that causes lifetime disability. It helps to develop physical fitness and endurance using specific exercises to decrease stress and builds self-esteem in the development of a healthy lifestyle. It involves a professional interaction between physical therapist, physical therapist assistant, patients, other health care providers and patient family members and communities. The physical therapists are specially trained to work with injuries, and many specialize in particular areas of the body. The types of therapy are provided in special…
It is the care taken by individuals towards their own health and well-being, and includes the care extended to their children, family, friends and others in neighborhoods and local communities. Self-Care includes the actions individuals and care-givers take for themselves, their children, their families and others to stay fit and maintain good physical and mental health; meet social and psychological needs; prevent illness or accidents; care for minor ailments and long-term conditions; and maintain health and wellbeing after acute illness or discharge from…
The goal would be to establish communication to express needs and to decrease frustration. Self-Care Deficit r/t to pain and discomfort. I chose this diagnosis because Mildred had to experience discomfort and pain since she was unable to meet her individual needs. Also, because the nurse never asked Mildred if she needs anything or is she was in pain. The goal would be to access Mildred’s abilities and deficits on a scale from 1-10 to aid in planning for meeting self-care…
Introduction: The Model of Human Occupation is a commonly used model in occupational therapy practice. This model will be the focus of the paper and was chosen because it is a large aspect of occupational therapy. Although I have learned about this model in different classes, I wanted to learn more about it on my own to further understand about the use of it in practice. This being said, I chose a quantitative research article on MOHO.…
Case 7.1 His Team Gets the Best Assignments 1. Based on the principles of LMX theory, what observations would you make about Carly’s leadership at Mills, Smith, & Peters? Carly’s leadership style would indicate that she has one team that she supports and favor with task and jobs because there’s a mutual understanding of their work ethics. She also has other teams that she has learned are not as willing to go the extra mile and works with them within their ability to perform. 2.…
