UALBP is categorized in 3 types of problem versions by Miltenburg and Wijngaard:
UALBP-1: Minimization of number of stations provided cycle time is given.
UALBP-2: Minimization of cycle time provided the number of stations is given.
UALBP-E: With the number of stations and the cycle time being the variables, maximization of the line efficiency.
Here cycle time is denoted by ‘c’ and the number of stations is denoted by ‘m’.
Example of UALBP:
Mixed-Model Line Balancing: Mixed-model line balancing is basically the assembly of several different models of a product on the single assembly line without changeovers and sequencing the models according to the demand for upstream components. The main purpose is the smoothening of demand on upstream work centers, manufacturing cells and as a result it helps to reduce inventory, remove changeovers and make kanban operation easy to perform. With the utilization of mixed model assembly lines, the customers can enjoy the benefits of getting large number of distinct products in the most economic manner and in short duration by minimizing idle …show more content…
This causes problems in the nixed model lines.
Due to assembling of variety of products in the same assembly line and large number of components required for assembling different products, difficulties in the assembly area increases and also in material controlling for large number of components.
Mixed-model line sequencing As stated by Baudin, sequencing is applied in mixed-model assembly lines in order to get smoother flow of materials and as a result eliminating the bullwhip effect upstream in the supply chain. It not only has a strong relation with the customers but it also help in making the assembly lines more efficient.
Purpose of sequencing: Xiaobo & Zhou (1999) gave four basic objectives for sequencing of mixed-model assembly lines. These four objectives are given below:
1. In order to maximize efficiency of the worker in such a way that conveyor must not stop during the processing and assembling of parts, the time required in total travelling of parts at every workstation in the mixed model line is
