Culture is a very complex aspect of society due to the big amount of diversity there is. Yet, almost all of us try to fit in one or two cultures. However, is a bit more complicated than that because even if we fit in a culture perfectly there are still a lot of differences between the people in our own culture. This became very clear to me when I conducted an interview to one of my classmates. Her name is Lindsy Bojorquez she is Salvadorian like me, but the differences between us were quite surprising due to the fact that we are part of the same culture but our life styles are different. This is because our life experiences have change the way we practice our culture and has also change aspects of our lives. One of the first questions I …show more content…
Therefore she is a very open minded person. The second aspect is her ability to speak Spanish. She said this has really help her move through the world and has even help her against racism. I also asked what were elements of her identity that made her proud. Some of this elements were her race and culture, she has always been proud of being Hispanic but she was discriminated at her school because she was one of the only ten students that were Hispanic. However, in her community the story was different people thought she was becoming more American and was leaving her Latino culture behind. Yet, she did not care she didn't fit in either community she considered herself a proud Latina. Another element she is proud of is her religion. She is Catholic and believes her religion has really affected the way she sees the world and the person she is now. However, there is some elements about her identity she says she is not very proud of. One of this elements is her class, she went to a private school that was full of rich kids while she came from a low income family. She never invited her friends over to her house due to the fact that she was afraid that she would be singled out …show more content…
This is because I was born in El Salvador and she was only raised in a house hold influenced by Salvadorian parents. Therefore, our answer to this question are very different. I'm not proud of having an accent, while she is not proud of not having one. She is very religious yet I'm an atheist. She is not proud of her class and where she comes from, while I'm extremely proud to say that I come from a very poor family yet we have manage to succeed. While she tries to conform with her Hispanic community I try to conform with the American community. I'm not proud of this yet this is the way I have been force to live because I'm seen as a foreign I'm under the pressure to leave my culture and adapt the western culture. This shows how our life experiences affect the way we see

Response 1 In the literacy narrative “Se Habla Espanol ” writer Tanya Maria Barrientos writes about what it was like to move to America in the early 1960’s. Barrientos explains what it was like trying to fit in and be accepted by the Anglo society. When America changes and the spanish culture is admired Barrientos has a change of heart and wants to embrace her culture rather than shy away from it. I relate to Barrientos because I grew up in a town that had mainly whites, but I soon moved to New Mexico where spanish culture as well as Native american culture is a big part of the community and people.…
