At the beginning of Lincoln's political career he did not know very much about politics so he started near the bottom. He soon realized that was how he wanted to make this his living, and he worked his way up the ladder. Eventually, in 1849 he served a single term in the U.S. House of Representatives. Lincoln was the only member of the Whig party from the state of Illinois, but this did not stop him from voicing his opinion. He often spoke out about the Mexican-American War and showed his support for presidential candidate Zachary Taylor (Bio.com 2).
