Lincoln’s Life and Assassination
Abraham was born on February 12th,1809 in Hodgenville, Kentucky to Thomas and Nancy Lincoln. Lincoln had an older sister and a younger brother who died as an infant. Thomas, Lincoln’s father was a pioneer and his family was fairly wealthy and well known around the area. When Lincoln was seven years old his family moved out to Indiana because of a land dispute back in Kentucky. His family then “squatted” on a piece of government land barely making it until his dad eventually paid off the land.

Although Lincoln didn’t believe that African Americans were equal to whites, he believed that every single person had certain rights that couldn’t be taken away from them. This spurred Lincoln into criticizing U.S. senator Douglas and challenged him for his seat in the Senate. Lincoln and Douglas had many debates all around the state of Illinois. Douglas would go on to win the election in 1858, but the debates between the two of them shot Lincoln into national politics. In 1960, political operatives ran a campaign for Lincoln to become president. They made sure Lincoln was known for his moderate views on slavery wanting to strengthen the country 's infrastructure, and wanting to put a protective tariff in place. In the race for president he ran against Douglas once again. Shortly after his reelection the Confederates surrendered to Union general Ulysses S. grant and the war was over. Lincoln immediately started to try and reconstruct the country quickly, barely punishing the Confederates if any at all. He was soon faced by a radical Republican group who wanted to completely reunify the South and North again but severely punish the former Confederates for the losses. Lincoln did not have much time to fight for his cause because on April 14th, 1865 he was assassinated by a well known actor, John Wilkes Booth. Lincoln survived the initial shot to the head and went into a coma for nine hours in the house next to the theater before eventually dying the next morning. Lincoln’s assassination deeply affected the nation and people were mourning all across the country. Lincoln’s body was left in the state it was after his death and taken to the capitol. His body was then taken by funeral train across the country back to Illinois to be
